bargain lamborghinis..
Discussion
at least in initial outlay terms :D
I spotted the jalpa in the PH classifieds and it looks tempting! almost like a de-winged countach :lick:
but why is it so slow?
only 7.3 seconds to 60! although 161mph is not too bad, I don't fancy being at the mercy of my friend in his mini outdragging me to 80odd as we go down the sliproad!
is there any reason for this? long gearing perhaps? can it be overcome with simple modification - or would severe open wallet surgery be required?
:)

Not about speed you know - listen to the noise it makes - closest thing to a Cosworth DFV I've ever heard.
If you want to outdrag your mate for cheap money just go and buy a Westfield!!!
I don't want to simply outdrag my mates, my Ginetta would eat a countach and give a diablo a very hard time up to 80 or perhaps a little more and it's standard (at the moment

I think that's another reason why ferraris and lamborghinis of the (fairly) modern type have that special aura - it's because you know that they are fast, whereas the the jalpa most definitely in terms of acceleration just does not qualify for that term.
I still would like one though

the reason it's so slow is down to weight - its about 1500 kg or the same as a Countach. This was due to strengthening of the chassis to meet US crash standards...

I see it only has 255bhp, the countach has considerably more than that and it's almost the same engine IIRC
errr....only if you bolt a couple of extra cylinders onto it....
Oh and Dazza in his 220 turbo will blow off all the cars in the Jalpa class I'm afraid - 911 3.2s, Ferrari 308s, Maserati Meraks...they're all not that quick in real terms. I guess that you might find a 348 a bit quicker though...or why not buy a Skyline if you want to give Rover boy a run for his money?
Think you'll find the Jalpa has a V8 - not the v12 in the countach...

Still a great looking car, and it has the top end - so in gear accelleration is probably impressive, just won't be so quick off the mark (though playing dump the clutch on one of these is probably an expensive game anyway!!!)

what you really want is a Silhouette - much better looking than the Jalpa, lighter by 200kg and much much rarer (52 built)
although I'm a little biased having just bought this

Wow!

Congrats!
Jeez Craig - are you going to buy up all the decent stuff, crush all but one example of each and sell to the highest bidder?
You now need a decent 4 seater - how about one of these...

thanks guys
I have been looking for an LP400 for some time but came across the Silhouette by chance on a French website. As it was the first production car it seemed too good an opportunity to miss. I didn't expect to find the LP400 so soon after.
I've had to spend a fair bit on it but it will be like new when finished.
I'm now broke!

Oops, link slightly wrong. As it happens, there's a white one knocking about for a lot less dosh, but it looks absolutely massive in white. Saw a nice one at Auto Italia recently too...along with a silver Silhouette that IIRC was for sale.
I got very, very close to buying a Jalpa once but was talked out of it by a trader....

The silver car, if RHD, is likely to be Colin Gilmor-Merchant's who is a gig Lambo collector - I very much doubt this car would ever be sold as he took ages to acquire it and is now contemplating returning it to its original colour of yellow.
Jalpa's are very difficult cars to sell. At the end of the day most people would probably prefer a 308 for the same money.
Criag,
Absolutely fantastic to see both an LP400 and a Silhouette being brought to the UK. I’m not entirely sure that jealous is the right word but I known damn well that I would be over the moon if either were mine.
It would be good to see either being displayed once they are brought fully up to scratch at an Auto Italia bash or the FOS. The Lambo owners club stand at this years FOS was the treat it always is and a friendly old bunch as well (I’m not a member I hasten to add) and a wealthier bunch as well. I was amazed recently when a £1000 is required by the organisers of the FOS to have a four car display which is why we poor old De Tomaso types didn’t have our own stand
Brilliant purchases none the less and would love to see either in the flesh one day
As for the Jalpa I had a look at the one 'Rosso Coarsa' are selling and seemed like a damn good way to spend £20k to me but has been for sale for a good while, the V8 makes a noise like few others though.
The white LP5000 they are selling for £35k also has huge appeal particularly in its true 80’s colour scheme of white on white and superficially at least in fair order

fair enough then, I stand corrected

I must mention again though that my intention is not to be able to beat rover turbo boy, I can do that (frequently

I'd rather have one than a 308 though

that silhouette is really nice

I don't think that anything is going to tempt me away from my goal of a 348 though
