I fancy a new winter jacket.

It won't be used to climb a mountain just the trek around the estate on my lunchtime walk plus town and the usual stuff.

Actually shocked what some of these cost relative to the perceived quality.

I wont set a budget as often it's seen as a target.

Any suggestions please?

I got a north face one in the John Lewis sale really warm almost too warm for the uk

The 100% polyester padding no doubt helps keep the cost down.

It's almost like when an Eastern European is spelling their surname out to me and my brain is, saying "no, no, the z doesn't go after to the c", it just doesn't look right!

Arcteryx are fantastic in my experience. Not cheap, but very high quality.

That was exactly my reaction followed by "no it must be zloty's or something".

Meanwhile back on planet earth and given that there's few places locally to go look at stuff what are Arc'teryx like?

Struggling with working out the weight of these things as whilst I hate the wind and cold I don't want to be one of those people you see sweating off 1lb every 15 minutes walking around in something literally made for the Antartic.

I have 3 of their coats, 1x hardshell, 1x soft shell and 1x insulted. The insulated I've had for 9 years now. Wear it most days maybe 4/5 months of the year. Washes up like new.

Not cheap but if you're not in a rush you can find sale items with big reductions. I don't spend much on clothes, but think coats and shoes always worth a bit of investment.

Originally went for them as they're relatively slim fit, and it fitted me better than any other coat I could find. Over years been very happy with quality and wouldn't get anything else now.

I have an Aspesi Parkettone.
It's not designed for the Arctic, but it keeps me warm and dry in British weather.
Lining is detachable so makes a good longish waterproof in Summer too.

I've had one of these for 10 years or more and only worn it 10 times or less. It's way too warm for the UK 99.9% of the time.

If you will be wearing the parka while driving, look out for two-way front zip.

much easier to use when seated.

Of course, this could only be advice from poor me with a diesel Octavia with "heating" that

does not work when driving at city limits with lots of traffic lights.

Oh, and regarding the parka, you definitely don't need top of the range Canada Goose/North Face McMurdo etc, as they are far too warm and you'll not use them.

Maybe worth checking out some of the ones at Silverman military suppliers for reasonable priced kit?
