Aviva car insurance doesn't ask occupation as long as it's not entertainer, footballer, boxer, gambler, chauffeur, taxi driver, or deliverer.

Are there are any other insurance providers which don't ask?

(For someone on furlough, maybe unemployed in the future, maybe a temp, it would be good to not need to phone up and pay an amendment fee every time it changes.)

Not quite sure what you mean, you tell them your job when you take out the policy, as far as I know you don’t need to tell them every time your employment status changes, only upon renewal, If that’s what you are asking

I've been with Aviva for years. They always ask occupation.

Just done a quote and they didn't ask for my job. Just as the OP states.

I can’t be the only person in the country who has an occupation that could fit more than one of the tick boxes, but is not really correctly described by any of them. Once or twice in the past I have tried to explain this, only to be told ‘oh we’ll just call you that then’. I sometimes wonder if they would continue to be as accommodating in the event of a claim?

It only has to be an approximation and close fit. Not every role is described. They are trying to capture the approx risk profile.

This must be new, at my last renewal they asked my occupation. Didn't stay with them this year as they jacked my fee by 30% for no reason.

As above I always struggle when giving my occupation as there is nothing listed that is close to what I do.

If it doesn’t ask then how does it know whether your occupation is one of those stated above and thus whether it needs to ask what your occupation is?

Nothing that exotic. I do lot's of different things aligned to AV, I usually put electrician as this is the closest/similar trade, however I'm not really an electrician.

I'm no Sherlock Holmes, but I assume it asks "Are you a entertainer, footballer, boxer, gambler, chauffeur, taxi driver, or deliverer? If you answer YES, you don't get a quote. If you answer NO, you do.

Not sure how accurate it is, but this might be worth a read. It appears to work for myself (I work in IT, so plenty of options)

I'd put you down as an engineer if it's to do with audio visual gear.

Being unemployed is a problem for some insurers. So be a coronation programme seller instead. Not unemployed, just that work has been a bit slow. hehe

That one always gets me - it’s a proper kick in the teeth for the legit people who have just been made redundant or whatever.

Why it should be a bad thing is beyond me - you aren’t commuting for a start (I’m going to chance my arm here and guess that has to be the big risk) and your mileage will be minute. I’ve gone to the office five days this year as I’m wfh, just put my third tank of fuel in since December. If you’re unemployed you ought to be a good risk assuming you’re not some scrote

I don't think it 'should' be a bad thing or a good thing, just that statistically people who are unemployed are more likely to make car insurance claims than those in certain occupations or professions
