Hi looking for a printer - probably Inkjet. Not a 3D printer......

It needs to be reasonably compact - smaller than an HP Officejet 8600.

It will mostly be used to print out text to read, so B&W costs more important than colour. Printing speed is not that important.

Then it's down to a combination of purchase cost & running costs.

Any recommendations based on personal experience?

I went Epson Ecotank.

No cartridges. Ever.

If you want cheap B&W printing look on ebay for an old HP Laserjet Pro. This one is a bit big but it costs buttons:

This, I’ve bought two now (one for the ex, and then one for me.. to replace it.. the printer, not the ex)

I’ve saved a fortune with Epson eco tanks for staff working from home. Argos had a deal with a free unlimited ink card earlier in the year, so only paper to pay for!

Thanks - I've just discovered this Tank concept - googling after posting.....

Looks pretty good - Whilst Epson are a long standing name in printing, I am drawn to the HP equivalent - any reasons not to?

Same here, Epson ET-2711

It works, wireless, scans and prints!

HP are evil and responsible for the whole cartridge/cost scam of the last 25years.
So yes, an historical reason that shouldn’t go unpunished or forgotten

In my opinion

Printerland are good for comparing cost of printing as well as purchase price e.g. Epson ET-5710.
Under Key Features they show cost of mono and colour cost per page.

I also went for an Ink Tank, most were out of stock locally so I didn't have a lot of choice and bought a CANON - PIXMA G3501 cost £199 the refills are actually just bottles of ink that you squirt into the tanks, looking online I can replace the black with a genuine refill for £12.99 (6000 A4 pages) on the Canon website, and even cheaper if I use non genuine.

Just been out for a quick look.

All the cheaper printers have a really flimsy looking paper feed which pops up from the back, rather than a nice slide in paper tray.

Time for some detailed on-line searching - Tank + Paper Tray + Compact as possible
