A 2008 Mercedes S500 has come up on a motor trade site i still subscribe to.

Car is immaculate, 88K miles, Full MB main dealer SH from new - 9 stamps on the service book from the local MB main dealer. Full years MOT.

Main dealer trade in, and being sold on via the main dealers trade auction outlet. Well described. No scratches, no marks, np dash lights on, no issues when driving, no rattles, no brake noise, no clunks. All good (it seems).

Looks like around £6,500 would own it with a private sale price likely around £8,500 if i ever wanted to rehome it.

Theres certainly headroom in the price for any unexpected refurb work (alloys look a little kerbed and it will need 2 new front tyres soon), and any short term unexpected bills.

How reliable are these? Is it likely to be a headache or worth a punt? I do less than 3,000 miles a year so MPG isnt an issue.

Thanks in advance smile

You should chat to these guys

They know everything there is to know about second hand S Classes. Strictly speaking £6.5k is above the limit of the thread, and there is another for cars above £5k, but I would still start there.

The drivetrain is bulletproof it'll be little niggly things like window regulators etc.

I wouldn’t worry about the engine or gearbox it’s the air /hydraulic suspension that would worry me.

Do they all have air suspension? It doesnt seem to be listed on the spec of this one but that may be an oversight

I thought they did yes, could well be wrong though, I know when I used to have an E55 the airmatic was roughly £1k a corner to replace, think the hydraulic suspension is similar cost wise, well used to be, I’m not sure if they’ve become cheaper with patent bits available as they’ve gotten older.

As far as I know there are 2 suspension types, the classic Airmatic and the very complex ABC. Both can be problematic but the ABC is more fragile and extremly expensive to repair. There are aftermarket replacement parts that are more or less half the price.

I am also looking into the w221, as they are aging really nicely and seem to be cracking value.
