Which broadband provider?
Discussion
We've been with BT for years as we get free broadband with my wife working for them, but she's leaving her job this month so I'm on the lookout for a good value provider.
No idea how much GB we use as we've always had unlimited. We mostly browse but my lad does lots of online gaming, I like the comfort of having unlimited, or high GB allowance. Will probably be wanting phone line and mobile as well, as we will lose our staff discounted BT deals.
Who's good these days?

Unless you go with virgin they're all supplied by openreach so the capability is the same, so look at customer service and price.
Plusnet were good, but currently with EE as they were cheapest.
Both have uk based customer service which helps, BT have an Indian call centre. How you feel about that will be dependent upon your experiences of Indian call centres.
Personal view is anyone but talktalk!

Plusnet and EE are part of BT. It all comes down the same wire, unless you can get Virgin.
Go with the best deal, look at cash back sites like Quidco. Most will be unlimited these days. Most will offer two levels of speed.
I've had BT, Sky, Talk Talk, Now BB (sky), all been exactly the same, never had any issues really. I change ISP most years to whoever is dong a deal, never pay more than £20ish a month for 38Mbs broadband.

Agreed, avoid talk talk like the plague, disgusting company in terms of customer service.
I'm with plusnet, so far so good after changing from sky, who were only interested in giving me a better deal after I cancelled so they can gtf.
I'm with Plusnet - they may be part of BT but their service is WAY better. You can talk to techies who actually understand and know how to fix stuff when it goes wrong (which isn't often). Not only that but they're great value when compared with the likes of A&A (who also trade on their customer service as a differentiator).I'm with plusnet, so far so good after changing from sky, who were only interested in giving me a better deal after I cancelled so they can gtf.
I can't get Virgin where I am but if I could I'd move for speed reasons - I can only get around 50mbit on my line (which of course isn't Plusnet's fault). I suppose everything will go FTTP with BT eventually though.

Plusnet advertise that they won't put the price up mid-term. The main part stays the same but twice they've sneaked up the price of other bits instead.
Also with Plusnet, they have put their prices up, yearly, but said to be only by government figures of inflation.I'm looking for an upgrade soon, they've finally got FTTC in place round here.

never ever vodaphone if you expect any sort of customer service whatsoever - i cant comment on the product but the customer service is worst ive ever encountered
We've been with Vodafone for 2-3 years now, and it's been faultless. There has been no downtime so I've had no reason to have anything to do with their customer services. One thing I would advise, regardless of the ISP you choose, is to use your own hardware instead of relying on the router they supply. Buy a Openreach modem and a WiFi router (I use a Google/Nest WiFi mesh router). It's suspected that lots of ISPs throttle download speeds at peak times, and the equipment they supply is generally poor.
Avoid Virgin if you want customer service - staying with my mum currently and the broadband went down last Thursday taking the TV with it, nearly impossible to find a number and everything online just points to their troubleshooting guides - eventually remembered the 150 number and phoned, got a lovely AI 'lady' who ran tests and said I'd need an engineer. They texted available appointments and I went for the first available which is 8-12 tomorrow - they texted last night saying they could come today between 4-7, great! Text this morning moving us back to the original appointment tomorrow - the most frustrating experience I've ever had with service providers, round and round in circles.
I'm with BT at home, one issue in eight years, their end, and they sorted it within 48 hours - they won't negotiate when your contract is up though or price match for new customer price, so we just alternate whose name it's in.

I’m a satisfied Sky customer. My package is broadband, landline & the sports channels, on which I get a big discount because I have ‘Platinum VIP’ status as a long-standing customer. Their customer service has improved markedly in recent years. Once you act get through to speak to someone, they can’t do enough to help.
I've just moved from years with BT to John Lewis. It shows as Plusnet though when doing a speed test and I'm getting an extra 5meg download speed, which is a decent increase when I was only on 26meg with BT.
The £50 JL voucher made the deal the best one and I think it's only a year contract as well.

You get should get a trickle of offers through the customer area of the BT website, if something comes up cheaper you can usually switch before contract is up.I'm with BT at home, one issue in eight years, their end, and they sorted it within 48 hours - they won't negotiate when your contract is up though or price match for new customer price, so we just alternate whose name it's in.
I am paying BT £60 monthly for 4x 3gb sims + 60mb fibre.
