The Strange Life of John McAfee
Discussion
This just caught my eye on the BBC website
Anti-virus creator John McAfee arrested over tax evasion charges
I had just assumed that McAfee was a corporate anti-virus product that made every Windows machine I've ever installed it on run very badly. I thought it was just a brand name, not a real person behind it.
That story took me down this rabbit hole from 2013
Whoah, talk about a colourful life!! An interesting one to follow. Seemingly the Feds trying the old Al Capone trick on him!

Didn't know he was a real person either, but I always like to assume so.
I imagined he'd be a hard bitten Scot with a leathery face and darting eyes, full of military analogies and grim warnings about attacks. A bit short tempered with other inhabitants of Windows and their lax attitudes to security.

Every computer I've ever had it on ran better when it was removed. I'd rather use something like AVG free than Norton!
Mmm yeah okay. Well, if it's any comfort, John McAfee also removes any McAfee anti-virus he finds on his computers. He hasn't had anything to do with the company which produces the McAfee anti-virus software for nearly thirty years.John McAfee said:
""Secondly, I practise safe computing. If someone sends me an email with a link, I'm not going there until I can call the person to verify that they sent me the email."
Imagine being that paranoid that you behave like that ...John M: "Hey Dave, that email you sent me about going to the pub, was that really from you?"
Dave: (sighs) "Yes mate, just like every other one I send you. Do you mind if I get back to what I'm doing? See you at 8, it's your round, contactless or ApplePay only these days"
John M: "Ah, I'm out .... "
And yet people still claim that crypto isn't a scam.
"The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday sued John McAfee, creator of the eponymous anti-virus software, alleging that he made over $23.1 million in undisclosed compensation from recommending seven cryptocurrency offerings on Twitter that were materially false and misleading.
The regulator, which is seeking a trial by jury, alleged that from at least November 2017 through February 2018, McAfee recommended cryptocurrencies that he was paid to promote, while falsely denying “he was being paid by the issuers.”
“McAfee leveraged his fame to make more than $23.1 million in undisclosed compensation” by recommending at least seven initial coin offerings or ICOs to his Twitter followers, the SEC said.
McAfee’s recommendations were “materially false and misleading,” in that he tried to sell “virtually worthless” cryptocurrency tokens by encouraging investors to buy the securities without disclosing his own holdings, the SEC alleged."

I met Dr Solomon at an antivirus conference in Brighton in the late 80's. They were the biggest antivirus poroiduct at the time and he'd just sold the company.
I asked him why "oodles of cash dear boy, oodles of cash" in an almost Brian Blessed voice...
That takes me back. I used to sell Dr Solomon. They were the only vendor who insisted on invoicing the customer themselves, rather than the reseller. We then received our commission back from them afterwards. I asked him why "oodles of cash dear boy, oodles of cash" in an almost Brian Blessed voice...
Re the crypto a friend went to a paid for seminar where JM spoke and recommended a coin (I won't name). Said friend became obsessed and wanted me to get in on it. In the end I did buy some crypto not that one. In early Dec my holding doubled in value by Jan it was basically worthless lol.
Today I still have a lot of crypto and have broken even but its just for fun not an investment. If 2017 prices returned there would be a lot of much wealthier people about inculding JM.

"In July 2017, John McAfee said he would “eat his own dick” if Bitcoin does not hit $500,000 within three years."Today I still have a lot of crypto and have broken even but its just for fun not an investment. If 2017 prices returned there would be a lot of much wealthier people about inculding JM.
In July 2017 BTC was $2659
on December 18 2017 BTC hit $19,007 before falling back to $3,433 on February 8th 2018
Do we think a lot of people lost a lot of money because of this tweet, and a handful of people made a fortune?
