I have an M135i, my son has a Fiesta ST, he has asked on occasion if he can have a go of my car, he is 25 at the end of November so was thinking I may pay the extra £100 odd and get him on my insurance.

He is currently staying in Scotland, if I make him a named driver on my car, I am already one on his, if he takes my car and leaves me his for a couple of weeks are we breaching any insurance rules there ?

If you are both named drivers on each other's policies swapping cars for a couple of weeks should not be a problem.

For months at a time it might. Some insurers might think he was the main driver of your car but it was insured in your name because that would be cheaper!

Have you actually checked that it's £100, or is that a guess? I think that's a bargain.

Did a few quotes and changed the parameters, got 10 years NCD, low risk postcode and it was £400 without him and £500 ish with, Tuning box declared.

Shows how much difference a postcode makes. I'm paying that for a Mondeo....

Does he live at home and have the same post code or would he be using the car from his own home and different post code ?

Doesn't matter. There's no policy condition to say named drivers have to live with the policyholder, and if the arrangement is temporary, and the policyholder's postcode is still the postcode where the car is predominantly kept over the course of the year, then all's fine.

He lives near Prestwick airport, his car is insured there, its fairly rural.

Mine is due renewal, will ring up and ask the question as part of getting the new policy, normally more amenable before they get your money biggrin

Tempted to get his and let him keep the BMW, then tune the Fiesta up to 300 bhp, love it but it just needs a bit more go.

OK, understood and good to know.

It's good to be safe but I think OP is overthinking it.

The majority of people cohabiting in 2+ car households will have a car each, with their partner as a named driver, and head out in each others' cars without giving it a moment's thought beyond "which car is best suited to what I'm heading out for?"
Being such a standard way of doing things, if it was an issue we'd have had all the media attention like we had with:
- insurance fronting
- people assuming they have doc cover when they don't,
- people using their car to drive to a different place of work to their usual without business insurance cover.
- people thinking you can legitimately buy cheap insurance from some bloke down the pub/kebab shop.

Agreed. My partner and I do exactly that. We're both named on each others policies. We mainly drive our own cars, but think nothing of using the other when it suits.

I think between husband and wife, or partners, insurers couldn't give two hoots. They are often around the same age. But it's a bit different with parent/child. You need to ensure that if the child is the named driver, they don't become the main driver, or if they do, the insurer knows about it.

I think that was the OP's concern, although in this case he doesn't have anything to worry about.

Thats the point, he will be the main driver for a month effectively, think I will speak to them before I do it so they can make a note on the file or say why its not acceptable rather than it being a problem if he has a bump.

Be careful not to run too many "changed parameter quotes". Insurance companies can "see" your internet journey and know when quotes are being "gamed".

Got it sorted, gone with Admiral, chap on the phone was super helpful and efficient. Said its not an issue if he takes it, as long as the main place its kept half of the time or more is my address.

Cost £550 for an M135i with a tuning box, one non fault accident 2 years ago and an almost 25 year old on.
