I remember reading a Guitar World feature back in the early 1990's on The 100 Greatest Rock Albums, and they waxed lyrically on Van Halen's self-titled first album released in 1978. Of course, I had to buy a copy to see what all the fuss was about.

Maybe it's just my age (67) but there are so many greats leaving us.at the moment
65 is no age to go, guess it's the R&R lifestyle.
Although currently listening to Alice on Planet Rock

started smoking at 12, needed alcohol to perform, blamed the metal guitar picks for his tongue cancer.as his lungs were clear.
A sad end to a great musician, performer and entertainer.

The day before EVH passed away Rick Beato did a fun video of what EVH’s version of Stairway to Heaven’s solo would sound like. That’s quite spooky, as EVH’s health was not public knowledge. This is a great video I think.

Totally agree with this, I think the Beat It solo was one of first memories of loving the electric guitar solos when I parents had the album playing in the car. Apparently he never has any royalties for it and did it as a favour!
He has got to be up with Hendrix for electric guitar legends.

RnR lifestyle could have been a factor but I have a felling his father had something very similar so there could well have been a genetic susceptibility...
