With a bit of new GPU at the end.

Bugger.

Been putting off my PC build until I could get my hands on a 3070/3080 GPU, or a good discount on a 2070 Super (only need good 1440p performance at the moment).

Now I'll have to decide whether to wait a month or so for either the newer Ryzen 5 5600X CPU or a price reduction in the Ryzen 5 3600XT I've put in my basket.

Will now wait until the pricing for the 5900X is confirmed and what this does to 3900X prices.

disappointed with the price on the 5800x, $449 so probably £399, its predecessor the 3700x was £319. hopefully they will be discounted by the retailers.

Supposedly $549 for the 5900X and $799 for the 5950X.

But you can probably just swap the $ to a £ to see how much we'll have to pay in the UK frown

Is the predecessor not the slightly underwhelming 3800X (if you consider the extra performance vs the extra price), rather than the 3700X?

If so, it's probably not a huge difference.

It looks like about a $50/£50 premium for the newer, equivalent (but faster) chip.

The 3900X is around £400, so I expect the 5900X to be around the £450.

And if these earlier leaks are correct - https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/news/amd-ryzen-7-5...

Ryzen 7 5800x - £350-400? (ish)
Intel i9-10900k - £550

I excitedly clicked on headlines about the new AMD 5000 processors, especially with talk of "lots" of cores. But was somewhat deflated when I realised this is all consumer CPUs... I'm spending most my working day speccing servers with the AMD 64 core server CPUs. Working on large IT systems kinda ruins the excitement around consumer IT.

Horses for courses. Server CPUs are rubbish for gaming. The big jump in this generation on the consumer side is single core performance.

I have a 3700x and x570 board, it's overkill for my needs, it's never even close to maxing out with anything I've done. Great CPU for gaming and working on. I'd recommend picking it up cheaper once the new line releases.

im thinking about going down this route, will wait for the benchmark results on the 5600x before committing though. 5800x seems overpriced a tad to me.

This was my plan - but with a likely £100 increase from Ryzen 5 3600 (£200) to 5600X (£300) (ie equivalent 65w TDP parts) I can buy a Ryzen 7 3700X for the same money so i've decided on that route instead.

I game at 4K and 60hz. The new Zen 3s don't provide a benefit as far as I can work out. A Ryzen 5 3600 will still be a good match for a 3080 or prospective NAVI 2 GPU that can give the same performance. It's obviously a different story at lower resolutions but as far as I can see 4K is GPU bound not CPU.

I’m due an upgrade and I’m thinking along these lines. 3900x seems to fit my budget, albeit unlikely to use its full performance often, if ever. But more future proof.

On pricing, is it likely to drop in price while stocks last? Its price will surely be dictated by its performance relative to new lineup. If that’s somewhere between 5800x and 5900x then can we expect much movement from its current Amazon price of ~£400 (inc cooler), given the zen 3 pricing bump and assuming something close to $ = £?

I’m considering jumping into 3900x now on that basis instead of waiting, albeit this is the first CPU announcement that I’ve ever followed and don’t know what the effect on outgoing-gen pricing usual is.

I was hoping that the 3xxxx prices would drop to accommodate the 5xxx series, but with the increase, I don't see that happening.

Same here ... It's such a capable CPU and thanks to AMD supporting the AM4 socket it means I can make a massive upgrade to the 5900x in 12-18 months time (when prices will be lower), very easily.

If last year is anything to go by with the 2700x, there should be some great deals on the 3700x on Black Friday.

Intel really need to pull their finger out - they are shockingly far behind the competition in the one thing that they are good at, making Intel compatible processors....

I think AMD is currently wafer supply constrained at TSMC with 7nm, so with Apple moving to 5nm their supply situation is likely to increase.

Until that's the case they might as well get as much as possible for each wafer, rather than optimise for total sales, I suspect prices are likely to fall possibly at the same time as they fill out the rest of the 5xxxx range and offer a Zen 3 compatible BIOS for 4 series motherboards.
