Suicidal Thoughts
Discussion
Before any one panics and thinks I'm about to jump off a bridge, that is not the case! I have no suicidal plans - this is more about the longterm impact of mental health and impact of a previous suicide attempt and thoughts.
Having been nuts before and only being alive as I was discovered mid suicide attempt, I wonder about the aspect of suicidal thoughts in your head. Obviously when i was very ill, I had very much active plans and ideas to end my life. Since my recovery this is no longer the case.
However, I still routinely think about suicide. Not because Im thinking of doing it. Its just in my mind. Can be random or (often lately) triggered by news of other suicides amongst people i know etc - and sadly there is a lot of it about.
Should I be worried that I have these feelings? I kind of think its like once you "open the box" your mind always sees it as a "valid option" or "solution" to lives problems where as someone who hasn't been that ill in the past wouldn't necessarily think about it in that way.
I have thought about speaking to a shrink/counsellor but I imagine that would just raise red flags that and make them think I am at risk.
Anybody else who has been suicidal in the past still get the thoughts?
Its the same with self harm - That was a coping skill for me when seriously ill and again, although I have no intentions of doing it, the thoughts of cutting are still there.
Just thought I'd throw that out there as theres a good few fellow nutters on PH so am interested to hear your thoughts.

I tend to remind myself that it is a very permanent solution to an often temporary problem.
Great way of putting it. there have been periods of my life when I would have morbid thoughts every day but I believe you get one shot at life and there's nothing after so you owe it to yourself and those around you to just live in the best way that you can. Fortunately those dark periods are a distant memory now. A500leroy said:

You should think about speaking to someone. I've had some s
t times lately but there's always a chance to turn things around. There should be for you too, talk to someone.guards red said:

no ive been planning it for a while now ( see my other threads) and genuinely when my folks have passed over in about 10 yrs time, im going to join them and leave this nasty crappy pointless earthly existence behind.
What's your plan for the 10 years leading up to that? There is a trend in mental health threads recently. An OP starts a thread about his or her own mental health concerns. Leroy pops up, posts about his own and then the thread becomes a back and forth of well meaning people giving Leroy advice and Leroy point blank refusing to do anything at all to help himself. I would encourage Leroy to start his own thread.
ETA: I realise this post looks callous in isolation.

What is the negative consequence of that though? You think that someone will find you and put you in a straight jacket
I don’t really know the answer to your question of whether it is ‘normal’ to have these thoughts, but as a person who was in a low place and decided to get help, I think there is huge value in talking to some kind of therapist.
I am not very happy at the moment because of circumstances. That is fine. However,I’m a bit more mindful of what’s going on in my head these days, as a result of previous therapy- and I find myself less prone to the kind of negative spiral type of scenario as a result.

There should be for you too, talk to someone.I've told my wife that I'd happily be euthanised on or around my 80th birthday, assuming I live that long, of course. I've got people in my life that I love and want to be there for, and I don't ever want to be a burden for them.
If Leroy wants to check out once his parents die, that should be fine, if that's all he's got to keep him going. I hope that he finds something worth living for in the interim, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't.
