Amusing aside. The later half of the article is a little concerning though, the French attitude is mystifying.

The French can either have a "bad deal" or zero access.

They refuse to accept the situation on the ground has changed and in this case they can't cherry pick.

Simplistic thinking, have a read of this and then consider the implications.

Surely we give those 50 fishermen named in the treaty their rights (given they will have died 300 years ago) and that’s that, right?

Aren’t the “implications” that we gain e650 million and that we have been ripped off by up to e650 million every year for years?

Isn't the French position something along the lines of "We've used the UK's membership of the EU, along with the EU fisheries policies, to fish (and often over fish) in UK waters. We've become accustomed to taking all the fish which would be the UK's under international law once the UK has left the EU. So we want to continue doing that regardless of whether there is a legal or moral justification for doing so".

Tell him that he can have the fish if he gives us back Calais. I mean, it’s English property isn’t it?

An essential part of Brexit preparation should have been the construction of a fleet of fast gunboats.

They're diverting our attention from something else.
Oh look, a fish!

I can't see that they'd genuinely be so damn fixated on getting their greasy flippers on our sealife, unless they are as power crazy as some say. Or they don't want a deal.

If my tax pounds and pence were put into said fleet I would struggle to have an issue with that. Sure to be the jewel in our Brexit crown.

As are we IMO. The fishing industry is emotive and has been terribly run, but in terms of financial value it's a pittance that would be dltraded in a heartbeat for some other juicy market access.

Given the nationalistic mood of late, it may be politically worth financial pain to get our waters back though. Boris could do with a tank/thatcher moment and fishing could provide one.

Or use it as a bargaining chip, those cars we make the use foreign parts, let's just say they're British and tariff free, in return you get some more fish.
Though personally I'd have gone for, well in that case any cars fun the EU that have Japanese or Turkish parts in then clearly aren't fun the EU either so there's tariffs on them.
