GOLF GTD... or..?

Hi guys.
New here.

I’ve come to the point where I will have to be doing over 30,000 miles per annum and have decided to part ways with my petrol and opt for a diesel ( I know I know)

I wanted something solid and reliable, I’ve shortlisted a MK7 GTD or a MK 7.5 GTD both in DSG -
is the extra £2,000+, worth the facelift?
Is the DSG in the MK7.5 better - especially with an extra gear?
Bonus question/request lol : can someone post a brochure of the MK7 GTD specification as I cannot find one anywhere.

Can anyone also suggest a “hot” diesel or a good motorway cruiser has to be a 2litre auto must I add.

I would definitely recommend going for the 7.5 facelift. It’s a much much nicer interior with the digital dials and new infotainment! Mk7/7.5’s are all great though I had a 2015 R DSG and it was brilliant.

I’d also say that dsg’s aren’t great and need oil changing every 25,000 miles, so once a year for you.

Funnily enough I’ve got the digital dash in my current car a measly Ibiza (but it’s great), but I use GoogleMaps / Waze on CarPlay and it just removes the navigation on the instrument cluster so I think I’d be able to live without it BUT the interior is a touch nicer on the 7.5.
It’s mainly the gearbox really is the 6speed just as good as the 7 a test drive won’t really prove anything to me.

I understand why manual will be a better option but for overall comfort and being in stop start traffic auto is just better for me. I know long mileage is going to come with it’s cons so that is a factor I don’t mind considering. Thanks for bringing it up.
I did drive a DSG Golf Estate for work for a week didn’t mind it? Why aren’t they great?
I know a torque converter auto may be considered to be better though.

I had a 65 plate manual GTD (7) for a year. I changed to a new 7.5 GTI DSG a year ago. I went out of my way to get a manual in the GTD but after having the DSG in the GTI I think it's a lot better. I'd go for a 7.5 DSG if you can.

That’s wrong, it’s every 40k/2 years.

I had a Mk7, with the 6 speed DSG, did just over 100,000 miles in just under 3 years. Averaged just over 47mpg for all of those.

Never had any real issues, other than relentless punctures - I was on the 18” wheels, not the 19”. I think I had something stupid like 14 new tyres, 4 of those were replaced due to wear!

I drove a Mk7.5 GTD when mine was in for servicing. Interior changes alone I would say it’s worth it. Didn’t really notice much difference with the 7 speed box. If anything felt like it was always trying to change up as early as it could compared to mine.

Problem is without me going over and a over for my budget there isn’t one without the heritage seats (prefer leather or even better the suede seats)
The MK7 isn’t a bad place to be and I prefer it more to the Leon MK3 and the 8V Audi (trim for trim)

Was the 6speed slow to change? If you recall 70mph motorway cruising where are the revs at?

The changes were just as quick, but the 7 speed I found was more eager to get to higher gears.

From memory 70mph was just about 2000rpm.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the leather. Think it wears to a shine very quickly unless you can keep on top of treating it.

My current vehicle is leather, and I wish I still had the fabric seats in the Golf. I find I get hot sat in a leather seat for long periods of time

Luckily for me (not the mrs) I do a bit of detailing on the weekends.
Once a month or 2 wouldn’t bother me.

Look to the Octavia VRS also. I have had a few, great cars and a big boot.

As a curve ball, how about a mini cooper sd? The 2015 onward models look very smart and the bmw diesel is very good.

Also, relatively few of them have expensive options like leather, so you're really limiting your choice.

There is no time limit: "The oil, every 40,000 miles, the filter may need to be changed as well."
