In going to watch this thread closely in case there is anywhere dropping big discounts on a 790Adv. I'm tempted with the 790 Duke but love the Adventure riding position.
Have a ride In one first. I had one as a loaner when mine was in for service and sadly it felt decidedly “low rent”. poo at Paul's said:

I thought the same - engine uninspiring (maybe a pipe needed?), seat a brutal arse killer, just didn't get that fun feeling from it.
Yes, seat was awful. We were two up, suspension felt cheap, gearbox on downchanges was utterly terrible, just would not get gears into roundabouts at medium speeds. On,y 700 miles on the clock, may improve at service but just the whole bike felt a bit “loose”. Very disappointing really.

Hmm thanks for the feedback. Have you tested the Tenere 700 as a comparison?
I'm in danger of budget creeping. I'd set a fairly lowly £3.5k to get me back on bikes a couple of months ago. This has since risen to £5k and I reckon before I know it I'll have spent £7k! Just playing the watching game at the moment as it's pointless me buying now when I don't get any proper free time til around April. Good to see how the market is though and what prices stuff is selling for.

Maybe I'm spoilt with my Monster's box, but it was totally lacking feel on the KTM, I couldn't tell when the next ratio actually engaged rather than the proper feel as the selector drum rotates that I'm used to.
Oh and the cool-for-off-roading foot pegs were brutally sharp, even through decent leather boots they gave me a sore foot, notably because of the box as above. I expect they'd make tatters of normal boots in a few miles.

I'd buy a 950SM or if you want luggage etc a 990 SMT - great fun, just made very obvious how much fun they are after riding a V Strom 1000
I've had the 950sm, great bike but I had some issues with finish and build quality. I had a 2007 model and the tank was starting to bulge, had an oil leak around the sight glass and being carb it needed sorting out periodically. I used to be very hands on with stuff but as I've got older Ive got much less time on my hands so want something that I don't have to tinker with or spend time sending to the garage.
I'll judge it all on condition when it comes to picking the bike, won't rule out a 950 but quite fancy a 990SM or SMT. I still have a soft spot for the Versys 650 and the newer models looks great but I sold one based on the fact it wasn't as fun as the 950. They're a very good bike though.

Yes it helps to look at them as overgrown dirt bikes - I thought my seat was damaged but looking at everyone else's that's how they fit I used to be very hands on with stuff but as I've got older Ive got much less time on my hands so want something that I don't have to tinker with or spend time sending to the garage.

I haven't tried a Versys yet but it's on my list
Bit of the opposite scale to the big spankers SuperDuke, but I was ogling at stuff on Fowler's site and noticed they've got a brand new RC390 for £3495 which seems pretty cheap. They've got a used one that's a couple of years old up for only £200 less!

When I was looking for a KTM 690 last year in December there was very discounted prices on "New" 401's 2019, 2018 and 2017 models - presumably lost at the back of a storage unit.https://www.fowlersktm.co.uk/pages/exclusive-offer...
I nearly bought a 401 but realised as soon as I rode it, it was just another 2017 bike and was concerned it would have been too slow for me
