I see the entries are coming in steadily. How about picking the winner by vote? Each person who submits a photo can vote (obviously not for their own) and the most votes wins?

Sorry to disagree, but I happen to like the current "single person" selection process. It means that we all have to work harder finding something that appeals to a single person, rather than the "masses".

It's often leveled at pro motorsport photographers that they shoot 'what'll sell to the mass market', not what creates interest for a single person. I have to agree with that premise, and hence I like the competition as it is (despite having a bloddy mare trying to win the sodding thing!)

Even though I hate this months subject (no photos to fit the bill) I agree with Justin. This month really had me on the ropes!

But you have absolutely no idea what will appeal to that single person, so it's a lottery.

My suggestion doesn't involve 'masses' but only other entrants - hence they should be sufficiently aware, technically and creatively, to vote intelligently. You're more likely to get a balanced judgement from a panel, than an individual with unknown preferences. That's why courts have juries

It's not so important that it can't continue as it is! Not so much a "lottery", more a passing of the baton.

It has all the mark of honesty that a camera club doesn't normally have:

I like what X does - X, what do you like? I like what Y does, how about you Y?

When someone comes up with multi-billions in prize money and turns it all into a commercial event I may change my opinion!

I prefer the way that this comp is voted for - it's more fun this way, and often the winning shot isn't the one that most people would class as the "best" one, hence giving everyone a shot at winning rather than the more seasoned and experienced snappers on the forum.

Besides, I think the fun is in the taking part rather than the winning, so I'm not sure it's really that important how the winner is voted for.

I also like the current method, having had first hand experience , setting the theme, seeing the interpretations and being challenged in your expectations is an interesting experience.
I also think votes would complicate the results process a fair degree.

And I'll stop going on about it one day but - IT'S NOT A COMPETITION!!
The theme setter chooses his/her favourite and, as was so well put above, passes the baton...

Am I the only one that's frightened of winning, since it means having to choose the theme for the next month! Not sure I can come up with anything in the event that I ever win!

You could always start a competition, sorry, baton, for the theme. People can suggest different themes and then you choose the one you like most?

No, I share your concern! But you know what? It's an interesting challenge and is quite like trying to develop your own photographic style. We all fall into ways of doing things, whcih tend to give our images their certain signature. But I'm keen to break out of the style I've fallen into and see things the way I did when I had a challenge as a teenager and was looking to pass an exam in photography.

I like the ideas that you sometimes see in the monthly rags, where a small group go off and phot something, and everyone comes back with a different interpretaion.... Same sort of thing really???

no you're bloody not alone! its was actually quite hard to find something that would both appeal and challenge

I was hoping this would actually be an easy-ish theme as its so broad.
I didn't want to pick something that there would be lots of stock photos for, like flowers, animals, speed, power etc. got to make you work a bit for the honour of being the next baton chooser!

V6GTO: i didn't have a picture for the last one, but had a reat time looking for one, everywhere i went i had the camera and was on the lookout, i actually got the winner a couple of days before the end of the "comp".

Simpo: yes, you're right it is a personal preference about the winner, you'd have to have a panel to choose the "best" picture. there were some in the last comp i thought were fantastic and some that were fantastic in an arty / edited way which wouldn't have appealed to me at all.
