I'm seriously considering (if I can get it past the Chief Financial Officer wife) an upgrade of my 981 S to a 718 GTS4.0. My 981 has PSE and Sports Chrono and I'm interested if anyone has any experience of how the 718 GTS 4.0 sounds in comparison. I absolutely love the noise from my 981 and am curious if WLTP rules have caused the 718 to dampen the noise.

Reason I ask is that my other car is a 2016 TT RS, and the facelifted version is significantly quieter due to WLTP rules and fitting particulate filters and it loses some of its appeal, curious if the same applies to the 718 compared to 981.

Appreciate any thoughts!

Night and day to a 981S. And not in a good way. The new car has a nice howl above 5k rpm but much less characterful below that than your current car. Almost zero pops and crackles on the new car.

New one sounds ..... different to the old 981 for sure but it's easily fixed with an aftermarket exhaust

Assume if a company car, with warranty, aftermarket exhaust will be a big no no...

Exactly the same concern here..... moving from a 981 GTS to a 4.0 GTS.

The 981 sounds glorious..... mixed messages on the 4.0..... I too had the same noise issue moving from an m135i to a new m140i, massively disappointed with the OPF impact

I’ve bitten the bullet on the 4.0 anyway - the reviews are hands down epic!

This is the only clip I’ve found that seems to capture the noise

That video appears to show a F4T exhaust - where the pipes exit in the centre? The 4.0 litres are spaced somewhat apart...

I thought that for a second but it’s just the camera angle. It’s mounted over to the left which makes it look like there is a central exhaust.

On the note of the sound, I’ve just been on a paltry blast to the farm shop, not exactly Le Mans laugh but enough to enjoy the sonorous exhaust note of the 981 GTS. Got a wave from another GTS owner, lovely car in blue.

I think that the new regs have strangled the noise from what I’m told however I think that there are some large positives to the new engineering of the 4.0 in terms of tech etc which make it a little nicer to live with each day, if you care about that kind of thing.

As much as it pains me to admit it, I agree with you. smile

The artificial pops on overrun are so juvenile.

That vid is quite accurate. The new 4.0 sounds pretty good in the cabin, but not great from the exhaust/exterior

Does the 4.0 have the soundaktor like the 2.0 and 2.5 4 pots? If so that would be pretty disappointing.

We heard a 4.0 GTS at the PEC a few weeks ago and our 981 2.7 with PSE sounds vastly better.

Yes, I believe so. Why’s that disappointing? A bit of nice engine/intake sound being let through is good, surely?

I think you're confusing the sound symposer with the soundaktor.

The GT4 and Spyder only have the sound symposer, I don't know about the GTS 4.0 but you'd hope it would be the same. The soundaktor may be just an F4T thing,

That’s why I was asking. If they’ve resorted to pumping fake sound into the cabin for the 4.0L that would be disappointing.

Sorry, you’re right. my fault. It’s the one with the pipe from the inlet manifold.

Janko Lind has just done a comparison of stock and Cargraphic exhaust (skip to about 5:30 for the sound clips of each)

From everything I have seen OP you will be dissapointed.
Some will accept it and some won't. It will be a compromise!

This. If you love the 981 GTS sound, as I do, then it's very different. I quite like the new 4.0 sound, but I'm going for a new silencer as it's just not exciting enough for me.

That's EU noise regs and WLTP for you though!

Janko doesn't half go on a bit doesn't he.

I actually can't hear any difference though.
