I had a look on the Apple website a couple of days ago and spec'd a Mac Pro (cheese grater) up to the max and the bill was around £50,000! I was wondered - would anyone choose all this? Surely this would be overkill for someone like Pixar etc.

They might do, if it met their requirements which at that level is heaps of RAM, fast local storage and GPU.

You could generally do slightly better with a PC workstation in terms of bang for buck but you can still get an equivalent Dell or HP graphics workstation up to a higher cost than that, albeit with multiple sockets and more GPU.

As well as the outright spec you’re also paying a premium for certified compatibility and support for professional apps which cost as much as the hardware to license... to put these systems in context. That’s why an nVidia workstation card might cost 6 times more than the similar consumer card based on the same chips.
