Due to some fortune with a London house sale we are now in a position earlier than originally planned to buy a big-bhp SUV.
We've considered and driven a 616 bhp twin-turbo 4.4 litre X5M Competition with an 8 speed automatic 'box. We have read about 4 litre V8s with similar 'boxes from Audi and Porsche with 580 bhp. We looked at the spec of a Mercedes with 470 bhp and a lovely sounding engine (by all acounts) with 9-speed automatic.
Then parked up in Wilmslow last night was a Premier League footballer's Maserati Levante Trofeo with a 3.8 litre V8 and 2 turbos. 580 bhp, up 50 from the normal Levante 3.8. Ferrari make the engine and that really appeals to me, it certainly does the business in their supercar, albeit in a higher state of tune. (We could get a re-map later on perhaps?)
What would you buy on a budget of £90K IF you were in the market for this kind of car? (Which rules out the stunning Lamborghini Urus and it's glorious 650 bhp!)
Spoiled for choice is a major issue here!

Does it have to be an SUV?
Audi RS6 is the no-brainer option in that budget / approximate class. As the reluctant owner of an SUV, I'd only ever have one with very young kids, otherwise I'm not seeing the appeal. Fitting a socking great gas-guzzling engine makes little sense when they handle like a van. An SUV should be mated to a frugal diesel for my money.
Of the list, I'd probably opt for the X5M if it had absolutely to be an SUV, else an RS6.

Another couple of months at the rate your budget is creeping and you'll be shopping for a mink-lined Cullinan with a helicopter made of saffron in the boot.

Photo 22 of the satnav showing the nearest petrol station sums up my experience of owning a big petrol suv. I now have the 4.4 V8 diesel giving 34mpg average/500miles to a tank although I believe LR have dropped that engine from the line up now.

Hahaha brilliant - X1 23d to £45k quick car to £90k "mega SUV" in less than 3 months.
I had a look at a Maserati and to be honest the amount of money they want for it the interior is a pretty poor place to be. I would also say that goes for the Alfa i know a lot of people rave about it but the interior is plastic as hell.
over time the Cayenne has matured nicely it is almost the most subdued and understated performance SUV on the market, especially compared to an X5M or range rover sport SVR.
Personally if I was really pushing the boat out on a car i would be looking at an RSQ8 super fast, amazing interior, looks mean as hell the only real downside is it is a huge beast.
