Been asked to look at Telescopes for someone who is proposing buying one as a gift, not sure why as haven't got a clue so thought that there is bound to be some Astronomers/Voyeurs on here
So, is this a good buy at £200 or so ?
Celestron StarSense Explorer 114LT
Seems to be the one that comes up as popular/good value.
No idea what they will do with it, look at the sky a couple of times and stick it in a cupboard probably.

I had one for a while its not a Bad bit of kit you can see the rings of saturn and the moons of jupiter (just) as dots) with a 114 but not in detail , need a Bigger mirror for that.
ETA dont know how much more the 130 is but its worth going for it if it fits the budget size really does matter when it comes to telescope mirrors
Make sure you get a collimator laser , about £25 on amazon to set the alignment. When moving the scope about it will get knocked and throw out the optics.
That scope will be great for moon viewing so add a moon filter ... see how this can get expensive very quickly and once hooked ... im looking at my next upgrade being £3k ish !
add a 2x barlow lens too it will make a big difference looking at planets on a 114

Hmm, not for me and think this is the top of the budget as is, think its an opportunity for trying ti rather than getting fully set up.
Basically whether its worth buying and will get them enough to be going on with, it might end up stuck in a cupboard so no need to start adding all the accessories.
Go here and spend as much money as you are comfortable doing.
