Kids scooter help please

I've been tasked with getting my Nephew a new scooter for Christmas. He'll be 9 in January ann is 145cm tall now, and growing fast. Anyone here with Kids of that age know what is best? Some have big wheels, some small. Some have 2 wheels (I'm told thats what he wants) and some have 3 wheels and 2 foot stand thingies.
Not having kids myself I'm a little confused - budget max £50 ideally

I'd go with the small wheels one, the handlebar height will be adjustable to make use of it through his teens.

Two small wheels is a stunt scooter, at £50 you're at the entry level of the market.

My eldest has a mongoose one (Halfords) that's stood up to a battering pretty well or have a look somewhere like Skatehut and see what they have on offer. When my daughters had them (a few years ago) there were ‘cool’ brands and ‘uncool’ brands. This was based upon what others in their school had, so my suggestion would be to try and find out which brands his mates have.

Big wheels are faster and less likely to catch in ruts. Our nine-year-old son wanted big wheels because of the speed thing, but when I play on it (ahem) the platform height means you've really got to stretch to push away. Smaller wheeled ones are easier to push along.
Most have adjustable height handlebars, and most fold too. Check he doesn't want a more rigid stunt one with small wheels for skateparks

Take him shopping? Fun day out with cool uncle (I'm assuming here, bear with), what's not to like?

You need to know what he intends to use it for.

You can get different types depending on usage. If he wants to go on skate parks, he will need a stunt scooter. They tend to be more robust.

This. If it's just for pottering about on then Decathlon are good, however, if he's properly into scooting then £50 of Skatehut vouchers may be more appropriate. A proper skatepark scooter is £150-£250.

I got this advice from PH last year, and went with it.

I got the most expensive mongoose one at Halfords, but on a number of discounts with various methods. The wheels run smoothly a year on, and the small boy was happy with it.
