Is there any sort of British Standard, or other such, which new off road motorbikes have to comply with? For example ones for kiddies? I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere on the net after a little trawling.

Cheers

Interersting question.

If it is a childs toy it has to be marked with CE approval, but doubt it is classed as such.

Is it a motor vehicle that type approval applies? Don't know. Have a look at the parts used and see if they are E marked.

Suggest e-mail to

enquiries@vosa.gov.uk

or a word with your local Trading Standards.

Advise here result of your research.

Haven't come across one, However kiddies trials bikes are made in the EU so have to meet the normal regs. If you stick to those built in Japan and the EU you should be ok. Please note TRIALS bikes, Including those from Beta, Clipic, Gas Gas, Sherco and Xispa, and Off-roaders from Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha.

Thanks for the replies so far. Have tried Trading Standards but they weren't sure and said they might get back to me with the answer.

Don't want to go into too much detail incase... but bought a new bike for 12 yearold stepson which appears to have a very serious fault.

Seller has offered to replace most of the parts that could have caused the fault but we have lost confidence in the bike and do not feel that it is fit for the purpose they were advised it was being purchased for (Seller is a 'proper' bike dealer).

I just want to make sure that I'm making correct points and line my ducks up. From the initial attitude shown I fear this could be a bun fight.

... looks as if the machine is not of merchantable quality under Sale of Goods Acts. Back to Trading Standards who will outline how to reject it and get your pennies back.

Just to update.

Trading Standards have still not got back and they are constantly engaged so I've called up a few other dealers in the area.

I got pointed in the direction of the major local bloke for all things off road and he confirmed that an off road machine does not need to conform to any British Standards, etc.

So it looks like I'm only able to go down the 'Not fit of Purpose' line.

Thanks to those that tried to help

John
