Assigning a private plate problem

Hello guys,
Today I've bought a private reg for my car for the first time in my life.
After looking online as to how to assign it, here's what I found on the gov website.
To assign a private (personalised) number to a vehicle, you need one of the following:
a V778 retention document
a V750 certificate of entitlement
an online reference number
I've also found that apparently it only takes about 5mins to do it online with the reference number - I've checked my emails and it's there! A 9 digit number labeled as "reference".
I stupidly rang the insurer to change my details straight away (£50 admin fee) and much to my surprise, when I went to assign the plate I couldn't find the actual field to put the reference number in.

Is there a specific format I should use to input the reference number?
I really don't want to change my plates back to my old ones, just to change them back to the private plates 2 weeks later when I get my v750.
It clearly states on the gov website that an "online reference number" will do, so what's the deal?
I would be really grateful for any help or advice as to what should I do next. The lines are closed until Monday and I will need my car by then..

Who is the email with the reference number from? I don’t think a 9 digit reference number is tje right one.
The reference number that the DVLA require is the one from the retention certificate, it is a 14 to 20 digit number according to the screenshot you posted.

When I put the reference number in it's asked me to fill the last box with the reg so I've put the new one in.
On the next screen it just came up saying:
Our records show this registration number cannot be put on this vehicle.
We cannot find a record of this registration number, please check the V778 certificate and try again.

Looking at the messages its given you back, I would say that one of the following applies:
The new reg is a dated reg and is too young for the car (eg your putting a 68 plate on a 65 car)
The car doesn't have a valid MOT or VED (is the car in its MOT extension period?).
You've typed the registration/ref number incorrectly (from memory the on-line ref is the one on the web page when you buy the reg and it may not be the one in the email for obvious reasons).
I have done this a few times but not for a number of years, but it has always worked for me. Worth checking the items above.

Hi, the car is a 10 plate and the plate I'm assigning is 55 so that can't be it,The new reg is a dated reg and is too young for the car (eg your putting a 68 plate on a 65 car)

Sorry, run out of ideas... I have done it same day, but it was 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure I screen printed the purchase confirmation screen on the DVLA website and used the reference number off that (is it in your browser history?) rather than one from an email...The car does have MOT until December although it actually is in the extension period (Should've been out in July however it still shows as MOT passed on the gov website), could that be it?

You need to wait for the entitlement certificate to arrive, then you can assign it. Usually only takes a day or so.
This. You only get an online reference when you retain a registration online.If you have bought a reg from DVLA you need the certificate with the reference that’s on it.
The V750 will be with you really quick.

The reference number on the email purchase acknowledgement is nothing like the reference number which you need to use to actually transfer the plate over which is on the V750.

When I bought my plate, I paid for Newreg to do the transfer process with DVLA for me. I had to send off the original V5 with my original registration on it, in a few days, a letter back, and a V750 form allowing me to transfer everything over. I waited for the new V5 first.
A word of warning if you live in London, putting an older registration number on a car can mess up Transport for London's Ultra Low Emission Zone and Congestion Charge system, so for a while I kept on getting letters saying the car was not ULEZ Compliant, until they had updated their records with DVLA. Disgregard this if you have no intention of coming to London or living there
Retention is easy as well and can be done online via DVLA, who will re issue the original registration back to the car if you want to change vehicles and assign the plate to something else. They will send you a V778 document online. You can retain the private plate for 10 years, IIRC

I'm having the same issue this weekend :/ I've taken a registration off a vehicle we own online, and received the email confirmation. The confirmation states "You can assign your registration online using your retention certificate number" - the retention certificate number is in the following format: * ***** ****** ******* the last 7 characters being the registration number.
Despite the email saying I can use this number, there is nowhere on the online form that will accept this format.
Any suggestions anyone?!
