Friend is looking at getting one of these as a cheap runaround. Any issues to know about apart from rust and 1 airbag?!

Which engine? There are Zetec SE options (great engine in 1.25, 1.4 and 1.6 guise in the facelifted model), a couple of diesel options with a NA and TD (tough, a bit agricultural but economical and good enough) and some Endura-E pushrod 1.3 ones about.

You’ve identified rust. That’s the killer. Otherwise, most things are good. Gearboxes are sweet and strong. Brakes can be easily upgraded but are adequate. No model is ‘quick’ but handling is good. Electrics are sparse but reliable in general. Original suspension bushes will be worn but replacement is straightforward and cheap.

There's hundreds of that era Fiestas on the road where I live (coastal) so they must be pretty robust.

Great engine. Revvy, fairly frugal, tough. Cambelt change isn’t hard. Oil quality and regular servicing are important. They can leak from the cam cover. Not huge power as you’d expect, but they like to be thrashed.

Cannot over state how important corrosion is on these. They rot around the the sills, rear suspension mounts, rear arches, etc. Underbody protection was limited. The rear arches dissolve - even if it looks okay, expect there to be holes right through. Skill with a welder will revive it.

As long as the body is ok everything is cheap to repair. Bizarrely as modern cars have got heavier you will find even the 1250cc 16v engine can keep up surprisingly well if you stir the gearbox. They rev to 7k smile
