hi all,
i have just bought a nice looking and some what nicer driving jago from an ex member of yours. he gave me the detalis abot this site.

on browsing through i saw that the brakes of a jago could be improved much by doing a conversion.

i think my one would do well with one, as its breaking distance is not great.

but the problem is i am not at all mechanically minded and reading the instructions i have realised that i am not gonna be able to do it my self.

so is there any place where i could go and have this conversion done properly?

or should my local mechanic be able to sort this out for me?

need advice any response is much appreciated.
thanks

where abouts are you?
its a relatively simple welding job plenty of club members have welders
having just sorted master cyl on my own geep i have a spare rod i intend to perform the adjustable conversion upon
very fiddly getting rod in and out [4 times in a week so i'm getting good at it]
one thing i have noticed is that i have rods of 3 different lengths
2 off seemingly identical master cyls
I was just wondering if Jago supplied a longer one with any of the kits?
the longest one i have was fitted to the car when i got it - and it was built by someone who worked at a ford dealers so its possible he raided the stores and found a longer one?

i dont see a prob in converting a rod and sending it but first i am going to try and asscertain which of the 3 length push rods is an escort one as the longest one i have maybe providing suitable pressure to the master cyl - then again it may not - i'll cut and weld one maybe tomorrow - if i can get my hands on my geep someone else uses it so i cant just have it
do you think you could change the rod your self?
its fiddly rather than anything extremely hard

ok drseg,
if you could do the conversion, then i will try and fit it myself. i have spoken to a friend of mine, he is a qualified city&guilds mechanic, but has never worked in a shed after qualifying, its been 25 years since then and his skills are,a bit rusty.

but he is agreed to give me a helping hand, so it should be ok.

few more questions,

1) i want to use this geep(1.3, ford escort,1976)as my day to day car, i do on average 25 miles a day, do you think its a good idea

2) the road handling of the jeep seems a bit out of control. when driving, im having to keep my hands on the wheel all the time, and when on uneven road surface the geep is shaking too much.
are these common features? or do i need to do something to improve the condition?

3) this is the biggest problem i have, I am a Tall guy and I stand at 6'2". and the room between the seats and the steering wheel is a bit cramped. once i sit down its ok(still the wheels are at my knee level). but getting in and getting out is a pain.
the seat is pulled back to its maximum on the runners.
(its a normal escort seat)

what should i do? i thought a sllimmer much smaller seat would do the trick. do you think its a good idea?
any suggestions with a replacement seat?

is there a way to lift the steering colunm a bit more?
this being a kit car i thought theese modifications could be easily done?

thanks for all the help you guys have provided me with.
it is really nice and secure to know that there are experienced guys like you who are willing to help out.

when i got the jago, my partner said i was mad to buy such a kit without having the needed knowledge.
and to be honest i was a bit scared as well, but not any more!!!!!

thank you guys, thank you so much. especialy you, drseg, i have sort of taken you up as my imaginary mentor, you dont have any probs with that do you? LOL.

regards

I once described driving my Geep to a friend (who then went and bought one) as like driving the worst car you have ever had , but when the sun is shining , a wobbling steering wheel , scuttle shake , marginal brakes , noisy exhaust and intake roar are all part of the experience and when you stop at the traffic lights you are having far more fun and getting a better tan than any £40k convertible driving poseur alongside, and with a bit of luck you might just get away before him too ........

Mark

(The editor does not condone the traffic lights Grand prix , but most Saxos , Corsas , Zetec Fiestas at your local cruise are fair game and you can also weed out the non-Turbo Imprezzas!)

may be worth having the tracking set
the most stable setting seems to be a couple of mm toe out
unlike escort car was based on
see technical site accessible from club site
yes use it every day is no prob BUT its not an unleaded engine so lead substitute, lrp or leaded fuel is a must especially for sustained revs
or ultimately get head converted to run unleaded
mine was built by a guy of about 5'7 with an even shorter wife so my seats pretty far forward and i'm 6'1" so i experience similar hassles to you
best advice there is to look at where the seats mounted
is there room to move it back?
thre is a step behind seats that will probably prevent this
if thats the case ive thought of mounting back of seat ontop of this step with runners directly under the seat and just the front spaced to the floorthen i drove 2000 miles round scotland and was comfortable so didnt bother
legs wide apart driving position
i'd get an escort manual too as if you are gonna learn about cars theres none simpler than a geep
and you can always ask questions /phone etc if you get stuck

Hiya
When I first built my Geep I used it as my everyday car for 6 years and covered over 40,000 miles in the process. I am 6'2" and have standard Escort seats bolted to the floor as far back as the step would allow. Yes it is a little cramped but I can do long journeys in comfort so am not bothered about this position at all. I've just put it back on the road and am having even more fun, if that's possible!

Even though my side steps make a difference to climbing in and out, in the end it'll always be a bit of a scramble - but hey, it's a Geep and that's part of the fun!

You'll have more fun, get a better tan, meet more interesting people than you ever will in a bog standard boring production thingy! My wife was dubious about putting it back on the road, but it's odd about the car that gets chosen whenever we go out to meet people!!

Happy Geep'ing!

hi guys here is the progress or the lack of it so far.

1) going to set tracking this monday.

2) seats- the problem remains, but a little improvement, was able to slant the back of the seat further- it gives me an inch or so between the tip of the cushion and the steering wheel.(atleast the indicator handles are not touching my knees any more!!!)
as they say, something is better than nothing. but i will have to change the seats sooner rather than later.

3) what type of petrol?
spoke to the guy who sold the geep to me, he has always driven it on unleaded. but he never did a conversion, he thinks its still a leaded vehicle.
why then he ran it on unleaded i dont know!
he has done this for the past 2 years. what sort of adverse effects would it have on the engine?

is it ok for me to go back to leaded know? how do i make sure if it has been converted or not? do i have to show it to a mechanic or can i do it myself? i need you advice guys.

this guy also told me that i could get lead replacement material from halfords and add that to a tankful of unleaded, is that correct?

thats all to report from this end.

ah...the manuals...missed a set of them for quite a good price on e bay last friday. it was closer to me as well. but was out bid at the last minute. looking for another one....fingers crossed.

My partner had better not see this post.

Babe magnet! YES - with the top off and no doors - wind in the hair mode!

Twice in the past month I have had propositions at traffic lights from women not young enough to be my daughter but nearer to my grand-daughter - and that has not happened in a long time.

On a serious note my 1300 has apparently been run on unleaded and the valves have wasted away - no compression at all - it still ran but no bottom end power and it needed 10 degree BTDC timing.

If your engine still has compression start using an addative right now.
