Mrs Get needs a scanner to scan text from books and turn it into MS Word docs (for the editing of). That's all it needs to do.... Don't need hi res or colour etc.

What scanner (cheaper the better as long as it works) and software should she be looking for?

Ta people.

I use the Canon LiDE20. It's a thin, USB-powered colour flatbed scanner and has reasonable speed and software though I haven't tried the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) functionality.

It's available for £40 from dabs.com.

If you want something faster, I'm sure there are better options but as a basic one for occasional scanning the Canon is hard to beat.

We've got the LiDE35, which if I'm not mistaken, was about the same price from, excuse me , PC World...

Does what it says on the tin! OCR actually seems to work, scans are pretty reasonable, even scanned a few photos and it's "OK" (not that that was what it was bought for).

Ohmigod I've just admitted to being a Canon owner......
