Hello everyone

I have a 2010 E64 630i which I love (N53). Low mileage (66k miles), nice spec, full BMWSH and recently just flown through its MOT with a clean bill of health (again).

Anyway, I do keep having the urge for going for a E63/4 650i LCI but continually keep being put off by the big bills it will throw up. I've read many of the previous topics on here and they all follow a similar theme which is to get the valve stem seals replaced plus other bits; oil leaks; etc. I have seen that it is cheaper now to get the seals replaced with PMP charging around the £900 mark.

So I am thinking if I should continue to pursue the avenue of a 650i (of what will be a car that will probably be older than mine, probably higher mileage and probably have to put in some extra cash to buy a 650i) or I should just shut up and keep my 630i, of which I really do enjoy.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Thanks.

Do you use your 6 as a daily or just a weekend car?

What's the spec/options like on your current car? It sounds like a nice, well cared for example.

Do you think you can buy a 650i of the same/similar standard and have all the bits you want/need? There's a lot of crap out there.

I specifically went for the 630i (N52 engine) because it is considered a trouble free motor.

Having test drove the 630i and 650i before I bought a previous E65 730D these were my findings:

650i - sounded superb and went like stink; handling was fine for a big barge and it dealt with rough roads and twisties very well indeed.

630i - Didn't sound as good as the V8 (obviously) but still went very well indeed; handling was better; more precise, better turn in and took the twisties a lot better (it should do, it's a good bit lighter).

Unfortunately both examples, although well looked after mechanically; weren't in good condition cosmetically and non cropped up that I liked in between test driving them and test driving the E65 which I finally bought.

Unless you want the E6x for the V8 alone and have the money & patience for when bits do go wrong and kick up big bills; stick with the 630i; it's a superbly capable car IMO

Thanks both for your insights and sorry for the delayed reply.

My E64 does have a nice spec with a few options like adaptive xenons/high beam assist, soft close doors, memory seats, universal remote control, etc and I would like to think I have looked after it well during my ownership (no scratches / dents, etc.), serviced annually at BMW.

It is used as my daily and if I went for the 650i, that would also be my daily too.

I think if I went for a 650i, I would have to add about £5-6k on top of my car (as PX) although looking at the Webuyanycar valuation, my car has a higher value against a E63 650i with similar age and mileage.
That is the bit I am struggling with as I would end up going for a slightly older (6 months or so) car with the prospect of having to spend a small sum to get the common issues out of the way. On the other hand, it is a NA V8!

Whereas my E64 630i, it ticks all the boxes and it does sound good so I keep saying to myself, stick with it. But it does not feel that special.

I think Dan you are correct in that you need to have the money and patience if going for a 650i. Whilst I would go into a 650i with my eyes wide open about bits that would need attention pretty quickly, I do not think I would have the patience for continual issues and repairs.

A tough one!
