I took delivery of a new Merc two weeks ago, the supplying dealer is located 120miles away. Driving home I realised that the sat nav is stuck in Germany so contacted the dealer who suggested a few simple fixes, none of which worked. I booked the car into my local dealer, they’ve told me it’s a ‘strange one’ as none of the usual fixes have worked, they’ve ordered a new header unit with no idea when it will arrive, when it does the dashboard will have to be stripped down.

In the meantime all functions related to the nav are either inoperable or downright dangerous, for example cruise will suddenly decide I’ve entered a 30mph limit and slow the car dramatically. I’m dreading the prospect of creaks and rattles when the unit is eventually replaced and questioning why this problem wasn’t detected during the PDI.

Rejecting the car seems way OTT, but I’m very cheesed off and would appreciate advice from anyone who has been in a similar predicament, what can I reasonably expect the supplying dealer to do?

Could they offer you a courtesy car in the meantime? Seems like something they should be able to do given what you've said about the sat nav, and how much stuff on a car runs through the infotainment these days.

I'd then wait and see after the fix is done. It should be a simple enough swap and no real reason why it'd cause rattles and creaks afterwards if the technicians are competent.

Yup you need to hand it in and get a loaner. If its prone to dangerous manoeuvres you shouldn't be driving it

I should explain that the cruise only kicks in if I set it, the first time I used it I realised there was a problem, fortunately there was nothing behind me but it could’ve been serious. My dashboard concerns are on the back of a similar problem with a Discovery a couple of years ago, the screen had to be replaced and the dashboard was badly reassembled.

At the moment I’m more aggrieved at the fact the supplying dealer missed the fault before delivery and has not had the courtesy to follow up.

Either it was missed at pdi or they did spot it, it was a big fix and they thought "he's 120 miles away, let his local dealer sort it out, get it gone".

I would guess you bought from them as they were cheaper than your local dealer, they are 120 miles away, they don't care, you are a number for them, they won't see you back for any servicing, there will be no kind of relationship there,

That's quite funny!

Bit late now, but you should have called Mobilo or whatever it's called these days. That should have produced a like for like courtesy car although it's possible they'd have said the car's OK as it still goes.

Is the car on any kind of finance? May be worth seeing if they're interested in help (especially if it's MB's own finance).

The car is drivable but without a number of key functions for who knows how long. It is part financed through their Agility scheme.

You need to find out how long this replacement head unit will take.

"We don't know" isn't good enough. Things break and you're (thankfully) sane enough to realise that rejection is OTT but you'd be reasonable to expect a timeline.

If it's more than a couple of weeks - push for a loan car. If it's less than a couple of weeks, suck it up for a short period.

That's what I'd do.

Agreed, but I guess the COVID excuse will be rolled out at some point regarding parts which have to come from Germany
