Can anyone help me with a simple operation within GIMP, please?

Latest version (2.10.2x) and I have taken an image and opened a second layer, and then slowly removed the background. I am now left with a .xcf format file which shows a person with a chequered background (I will add a picture below for clarity).

What I would like to do is lift the 'person' layer and superimpose it over a neutral colour background, but I have reached the edge of my talent envelope.

Any help appreciated.

Go to YouTube and search for GIMP tutorials. Add the word layer to narrow the search if you need to. Lots of step by step tutorials there which will teach you how to achieve what you want to do.

Not familiar with Gimp, but does adding another layer behind your subject and painting on that work? (Like photoshop)
If you need any help to mask/hide objects or the background just Google/youtube 'Gimp Masks' 😁
