So he was prepared to go to Tier 3 but didn't because he didn't get the compo he wanted - typical Scouser!

Still he seems to think it's OK to let people get Covid while he has his argument, but no level of compo will help anyone who has died in the meantime. rolleyes

Not impressed. :wker:

Good one. And what about BJ and his advisors?

Not exactly. All he has said is he doesn’t think the local lockdown will work, but if they have to do it, the government should have to cover the bill. It’s a very reasonable point of view.

He’s the first politician I’ve been impressed with all year for bringing some economic realism to the table. I’m as conservative as they come, but he would have my vote for PM tomorrow for balancing the economy and livelihoods.

I blame the woke left Twitter mob for our overreaction, but don’t put Burnham in that category.

No, he is an absolute BellEnd.

Fortunately he has been put in his place, lets hope Sadik Khan is next...

I find it very hard to believe that this whole spat was over a measly £5m, with £60m on offer and Burnham demanding £65m.

In the grand scheme of covid money spunking £5m is literally a drop in ocean.

Because it was never about the money, its about painting the nasty tories as hating the north, the long game is to get back the lost northern votes.

But surely in that case the govt could have shut him up and ended all the bad publicity in an instant by chucking him the £5m chump change that he was demanding?

It needed to be consistent with support for other areas. Lancashire and Liverpool had already gone into Tier 3 and had support packages agreed.

They could have offered those areas improved terms in line with those agreed with Manchester, of course. A bit like the U-turn they've done on Liverpool's gyms.

It is sad that people purposely misconstrue Burnham as having demanded Manchester get a better deal than other places should.

In the weeks and weeks it took the government to decide the 3 tier plan, they could have worked out the payments that would be made to regions affected based on population or other clearly defined parameters, and avoided the negotiation altogether, with every area being treated fairly. The current horse trading doesn’t help anyone.

I may have the wrong impression but I thought the point of the negotiation was more to decide how it was going to be spent and to discuss how it would be coordinated by the local authority.

Certainly I believe you access the additional funding via your local council in areas which have already gone into Tier 3 and had funding in place.

Is anyone else annoyed with how he dresses for these press conferences? He is the Mayor of a huge northern city and looks as though he just fell out of a Wetherspoons.

I have no problem with politicians dressing down on occasions but when you are representing the businesses and the people of Manchester maybe smarten up a bit?

Its all an act.

In a similar fashion when asked what his favourite biscuit was he said "beer, chips and gravy". Because he is right northern is Andy and doesn't have time for any fancy southern biscuits.

Thought he dressed quite smart actually, not like people in my local wetherspoons!

If we’re talking about appearance, Have you seen the state of our Prime Minister?

Whilst I’m not particularly disagreeing with your sentiment...

I thought you didn’t like snipped quotes, that’s not quite what he said is it.

Fair enough it was slightly different I was just going by the headline because I thought it was hilarious and trying way too hard.

When asked what his favourite biscuit was he actually replied

Burnham said:
I’m afraid I’m going to depress you all by saying that I don’t have a sweet tooth and don’t eat biscuits… Give me a beer and chips and gravy any day
I suspect that in reality he prefers King Charles Spaniels to whippets and top hats to flat caps. wink
