Hi folks

Just agreed a sale for one of my cars that currently has a private plate.

I'll be keeping the plate and thats agreed, so I put it on retention yesterday.

However the car is getting picked up tomorrow and clearly I don't have the new V5 yet.

So what is the correct thing to do? Should I just fill out the V5 with the old private plate and give that to the new owner? Or do I need to wait until the new V5 turns up?

Any advice welcome!
Cheers

The old V5 with the private plate is now void and not of any worth. You need to wait for the new V5 before you can do the transfer of ownership online so a bit messy. Really should wait for V5 before handing car over but clearly this doesn't fit your plan

You need to put the plate on retention online right now.

Then you need to talk to your buyer, and explain you have made a bit of a paperwork mistake, and that the new V5 is on its way from DVLA, and it should be here in a few days, and what would they like to do? Unless it's your brother-in-law, they probably won't be happy handing you money, and going off without a V5 in their name biggrin

Thanks - understood.

What a pain, I hadn't appreciated the timing of taking off the plate, so that was a mistake!

for future refence, always take the plate off then get the v5 and then list the car! smile that's what I do to avoid the above.

This. if you have even remote plans to sell a car with a private plate on, first thing to do is get that plate on retention, and the original put back on, with a V5 to match.

really annoying that people wait until the last possible moment to take a private plate off, and cause all sorts of unneccesary faff for themselves and the new owner, when it should be the first thing thats done.

Yep, my bad totally - I hadn't given it much thought and just assumed it would be an online/instant thing. Lesson learned for sure, esp as I have my other call also for sale with a private plate - so I better crack on with that too!
