Not a town as such but a district (used to be a village) in London - Barnes.
On the plus side:
Some great independent shops (fishmonger, cheese shop, cafes, book shop, greengrocers, etc.); butcher is part of a small chain, small supermarkets, etc..
Fantastic independent cinema
Several good restaurants, though none really outstanding; (though there are some not far away)
Lots of excellent pubs
World-class jazz club
Location is terrific: by the river; easy access to London (train); was a bit easier before they closed Hammersmith Bridge! Easy to get out west or southwest - M4 and A3 very nearby
Great outside spaces that are easily accessible - Richmond Park; Wimbledon Common; Putney Common; etc..
On the downside:
Housing is obscenely expensive
Has more estate agents than you can shake a stick at
It's unbelievably smug
On the plus side:
Some great independent shops (fishmonger, cheese shop, cafes, book shop, greengrocers, etc.); butcher is part of a small chain, small supermarkets, etc..

Well done on calling it a town too, so many people think it is a city as it has a Cathedral, it isn't a city.
Emsworth, Hampshire.
Good connections by road and rail, however the A27 & A259 bypasses keep most traffic out of the town. Two tidal mill ponds to walk around and lots of coastal walks, also close to the South Downs. No huge supermarkets in the town to ruin it, but several nearby (Co-op and Tesco Express in town for essentials). The library has just been saved, and there's a local museum to learn about the history. Several pubs, plus a choice of cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and takeaways.
Plus, if you are into classic cars, Lillywhites Garage always have interesting stuff in for maintenance.

I went to school not far from Nempnett and spent many nights hooning round the local lanes. And whilst you've put up that signpost, my great aunt used to own the pub in Ubley. Just the name gets me chuckling...

I grew up there, lived in the pub on the river - The Watermans Arms. Randomly I went to school with the kid from the pub next door (Bulls Heads). I remember the Sunn Inn was THE place to be in the late 80's, everyone with their new mobile phone brick On the plus side:
