It's certainly edible, I've eaten llama several times in Argentina, most often up in the north. Can be good, as always it depends on the chef and the meat. not sure if you'll find an alpaca breeder here selling animals for meat though.
I gathered they were mighty expensive anyway?Robertj21a said:

I think they are, alpacas are bred for their wool. Llamas are beasts of burden and meat. You can also eat guanaco in Argentina, which is essentially a wild llama. (Llamas and alpacas are domesticated, guanacos and vicuña are wild animals.)I once stopped at an ostrich farm in the Cotswolds thinking I would get some steaks for supper. They politely pointed out that they only sold whole, live, ostriches.
of course it is but very little meat on a carcase. Probably quite healthy as these animals are not at all fatty.
There is an Alpaca breeder( could have been llamas!) in Cumbria who was trying to market the meat. IIRC she was pretty much drummed out of the breed society as most of the keepers are smallholders who keep them for pets and were horrified at the prospect. Quite typical but irrational behaviour. once you think about it.

The signature dish at El Baqueano in San Telmo, BA, where I had a celebration dinner last year was llama carpaccio with quinoa. A stunning dish as part of an amazing local tasting menu
