Hi everyone. Bit of an interloper on your site having previously run an Elise, but here goes.

After the demise & resurrection of my Alfa 156 (what a surprise there), have been looking at getting something a little more robust (& have been slated by all the Italian afficiandos accordingly) & though I was originally planning to get either an Audi or Saab cabriolet, am concerned about the security aspect.

So my question is, whats the S2 like. Not really an S1 fan, but for me the S2, even more than a decade after they stopped production, still looks like a modern, well proportioned & sculpted car. My budget would invariably result in a 100+ miler, but should I be worried about this ?

In addition, would it be better to get a specialist to look at the car prior to buying it, or are they (relatively) straightforward.

Alternatively, can anyway suggest a specialist dealer (not too far from Yorkshire) who I could be fairly confident of getting a fair deal from (oxymoron I know).

All assistance would be greatly appreciated & thanks.

Not really sure what you mean by an S1? If you mean an S then there isn't that much difference in looks.

I'd definitely get any Porsche of that age inspected. In my experience they always find enough things wrong to at least pay you back for the expense (and often a lot more).

What is your budget btw?

As an S2 owner I'd say do it. Definately get a Inspection done by a specialist as at least then you can plan for maintenance etc. I have basically spent the first year sorting out bits and bobs and now the car is sweet. A rough example of first year costs as per my profile, I think mine are a bit steep and I could have left some things for this year - i.e mirror electrics
Good Luck!

Wit regard to your question about mileage, as the owner of a car (S2) with 155k miles I have to be slightly biased, but it does come down to condition. I certainly wouldn't use miles as an absolute arbiter.

My car simply does not show its (mile)age at all.

On the other hand it definitely has an impact at resale.

So given a choice between two identical cars with different odometer readings, choose the lower, but given a choice between a good high miler and low mileage dog, well ...

A great car for the money - haven't. heard anyone slag this model off.

By all means get it inspected. However, any S2 will be well over 10 years old by now so expect to replace parts etc.on a fairly regular basis.

If you do n't. do your own servicing budget for maintenance costs of on average £1,000 p.a. the lowest bill I got for an annual service was just under £400 the highest just over a £1,000.

Unless your under 25/ have a chequered insurance history etc. insurance should not be too high if you can get it covered under e.g. a classic car policy.

Cheers for that.

Budget will be about £5000 (yes I know, but it is grim oop North). Am, ahem, somewhat over 25, so Insurance shouldnt be too bad, though as do live in the City Centre & have no garage, this might bump it up somewhat.

Will keep you posted, but thanks again.

Just to echo everyone who said get an inspection - I didn't, and it's cost me a small fortune in repairs as I bought one with a fair few issues I couldn't find, but an inspection by a specialist would probably have found...
