Once the 4.5 is fired up from cold, is it normal for the engine to stall as the car is idling (ie before it moves off)?

It happens to me somedays.

Over the last 2 days, what has started happening is that it stalls, I hear the dolcit tones (ones that come on after you press the alarm fob to signal that you can press the black button to fire up the engine), I press the black button - but instead of firing up the engine, it makes a peculiar noise (the anology that I would use is that someone driving a car turns on the ignition with his key, engine fires up, he turns the key again whilst the engine is running to crank the engine even more).

Q: Does anyone know why this is happening? The only thing I have been able to do is to press the red button when it stalls, and then start all over again.

Comments appreciated.

I sometimes find that my 4.2 splutters a fair bit when it is started up from cold. This seems to be linked to what the engine was doing before it was switched off.

If it got very hot before it was switched off (one of the fans on) then it could be that the fuel has vapourised in the fuel lines. Since gas is less dense than liquid, it stands to reason that when it all cools down again, there maybe a little bit of a fuel supply problem at first, which will then calm down fairly quickly.

Try turning on the A/C for a short while before you pull up - this cools the fuel lines as well as the cockpit - and see if the problem of cold starting goes away. (No good if you don't have A/C though I suppose).

Edited to say -> Sorry, I know nothing of the other problem you are suffering from, but maybe the starter motor is failing to engage/disengage?

Have you read through the Cerbera FAQs? It has a section on starting up that might be helpful.

YellowCerbie,

I had a problem with mine a couple of weeks ago - it kept stalling at every junction when the engine was cold. It was a problem with the tickover - and it was a cold/damp morning.

Since then it's been sort of okay, but the last few days when the engine's cold the revs drop and it stalls when I start it. Once I've driven it half a mile or so it's sorted itself out.

It's due for a service in about 500 miles, so I'm going to get it looked at then.

Neil.

Yellow,
The sound like a car trying to be restarted is exactly that, The Starter motor is dying. This is very common with Cerbs.
Try local dealer for one, or if you have a local garage you trust ring 01892 525398 and ask for Tim. He gets them from manufacturer, and saves a fortune over MD prices!
