I have had my 944 S2 for 3 months now and have a groaning noise at speed. This isn't always there and I suspected it to be front wheel bearings.

Having just had the car in for its belts to be tightened, I had the garage check the bearings and all was ok.

This leads me to believe that it may be power steering pump related... I get the groaning occasionally when turning at very low speed as if the pump is giving up. There is a small leak somewhere as well, but not enough for the level to really change.

At motorway speed there is (but not always) a droan from the front. Has anyone had something similar or help me shed some light on what this could be...???

Thanks

Ben

Leaks in the power steering system are very common, I trust you have checked the fluid level?

Yes, over the 3 months i have hardly had to top it up. Have been keeping a good eye on that as occasionally get a little puddle as evidence of the leak, but nothing too seriouse.

The power system might need "bleeding":

start the engine, and turn the wheel from full lock unitl full lock and keep an eye on the reserviour. Keep doing it until no more bubbles appear. Top-up where necessary.

Oh, Get underneath thec ar and squeeze the rack gaitors. These should be dry. Any fluid, and the rack is leaking and will need rebuilding/ replacing

while there might not be much difference, be advised the 944 uses ATF in the power steering system and not power steering fluid.
