Hello, fellow rust botherers, I'm seeking recommendations for a good solid A frame to use with a Land Rover for very occasional short distance one man tows of small to medium sized classic cars. I see the kit advertised on eBay, but have no clue which ones are cheap and nasty and which are strong and reliable.

"Don't do it, you'll crash!" IS an acceptable answer, but so too is "buy one of these ones".

Thanks!

I’ve got a proper trailer you’re more than welcome to use.

Thanks lots, but I am thinking of solo local rescues of cars with minor problems. They might happen at odd times.

I add that I would get a trailer but I have not the space for one.

I'm keen on this knowledge too, having a Landy and a few crusty old cars, could be a useful tool!

What about a truck ? See the first 3 minutes of Harry's garage video :

Very PH:

"Please recommend an A Frame."

"Buy a truck."

See also: "No space for a trailer? Buy a truck."

PH!

They do get nicked lots, too. Mine will fit in a standard garage. I used to store my mini on it in the garage.

Might be an option?

Are A- Frames still legal to use, I know a few years ago there was a spate of people towing with them getting stopped by Police and maybe not charged but warned. I think the reasoning being the vehicle being towed becomes a trailer and any trailer over IIRC 750Kgs needs to be braked automatically by the towing vehicle braking.

Is this to rescue yourself, or other people?

Doesn't appear to want to work as a link so you'll need to google it.

There are a few threads in SP&L, looks like you can recover a broken down road legal car with one, no problem, but if you're towing a working car all over the place like what people do behind motor homes and it's over 750 kg then it becomes a trailer and you need a trailer licence/ passed test pre 97 and brakes.

Princess Leia is a self rescuing princess. You can self rescue in mountaineering. More prosaically, you can self rescue when broken down in an old jalopy.

To be clear: the idea is very occasionally to tow my own broken down road legal classic cars a few miles, using as tow vehicle my own classic Land Rover, assuming that it is not broken down. I know nobody in my area whom I can ask for a tow.

I do a LOT of A framing. Let’s leave legal ‘ perceptions’ to one side.

You will see many, used once, then up for sale. Incorrectly fitted, they are horrific & potentially dangerous - because no one had run through the process. Get advice before hitching up the first time.

It is a simple process, but will involve grovelling under the front of the car, wrapping the chain(s)/ straps around the bottom wishbone. A large sheet of heavy duty cardboard is recommended - or a change of clothes. Horrid, in wet conditions.

The best combine straps and chains, and I recommend ‘ Solomatic ’ 2.5 ton, as the best all rounder; easily identifiable by the curved hooks at the chain connection. 3.5 is too heavy for domestic, chain or strap alone Just too clunky.

You may recall me from “ the beige” - shout if I can help.

I bought a Phoenix “dolly” from ebay, it has brakes and although slightly larger than an A frame is simple and suits my needs - I put a hook on the back wall of the garage and use its winch to pull it vertical for storage.
