Apologies if covered elsewhere but I couldn't see anything:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-54682...

Pretty disgusting conduct by the authorities in Qatar. A newborn baby was found in the airport toilets, so their attempts to track the mother included marching all adult women from a flight and subjecting them to a medical examination in an ambulance in a nearby car park.

No response yet from the Qatar government, is this fairly standard practice out there? Certainly reaffirms my complete lack of desire to visit/transit through that part of the world. All this from a country supposedly modernising and planning to host a World Cup...

Grim indeed, but then again, this is Qatar!

Also grim is to give birth to a kid in the loo and not seek assistance for it / yourself, which would of course have precluded the apparent need to subject these women to this ordeal.

It's seriously fked up all round.

As opposed to announcing over the intercom "Whoever had just given birth and left their baby in the toilet please come to the check in desk"?

A private examination in an ambulance by qualified medics [ with chaperone presumably ]
is a world of difference from the emotive " strip searched ".

What would UK authorities have done ?

Doesn't mention anything about a chaperone. You honestly think the UK authorities would have done the same?

This thread is comedy gold.

Would the reaction be the same if they'd found some drugs in the mens lavvies so decided to rubber glove every bloke on the plane to see if anyone was concealing anything?

Thought not.

Made it not to be illegal to have sexual relationships outside of marriage.

Wow, I knew PH was a bit primative sometimes, but seriously?

Are you saying you'd be happy to be rubber gloved next time you go on a flight because some random left some drugs lying around?

Or would you be ok with your wife/daughter/sister having to drop her knickers so a doctor can check she's not just had a baby?

Thought not... rolleyes

No I think you've completely misunderstood or I wasn't clear enough.

I'm saying that I don't think people would make comments like "A private examination in an ambulance by qualified medics [ with chaperone presumably ] is a world of difference from the emotive " strip searched" if it was the example I gave.

What happened in Qatar is abhorrent and has no place in a civilised society.

Ever heard of Postpartum haemorrhage? I imagine a female passenger on a long haul flight might require some emergency medical treatment if they had just given birth and would, as a minimum, require the plane to divert to get her off the 'plane and into hospital.

Might be wrong though, and maybe the Qataris are a bunch of perverts!!

Apologies, you are correct and I misread/misinterpreted your post. Fair point.

You've read one article which includes accounts from people who were there.

Here another.

'I was absolutely terrified': Australian witness recounts Qatar strip-search ordeal

I don't think either of those articles give the impression this was done out of concern.

there is a lot of 'medieval' stuff going on in the middle east. Did you know that homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death in several places in that part of the world ?

They weren't searching for someone in need of medical or mental health assistance.
They were searching for a criminal.

Sometimes it's not worth trying to be the Devil's advocate for the sake of it.

Were they? Were you there and witnessed the event?

I don't doubt the Qatari Authorities took a dim view of someone dumping a newborn in the airport toilets but I am not entirely convinced that they were 'strip searching' the female pax on this flight (not just the Aussie ones either, I imagine?) out of some sadistic and perverted search for a criminal.

What, women treated like dirt and afforded zero respect. No, that's completely unheard of across the Arab world. This is surely just an isolated incident.

Yes, they were. The woman who gave birth was considered to have acted illegally.
This may come as a shock, but some countries have different laws to ours. Some of those laws might appear to be archaic and almost inhumane including, but not limited to, laws that concern female rights.

Stop digging.
