A friend of my wife had her Credit card (Well known high street bank) scammed around six weeks ago...Two amounts for less than £30.00 were taken out by Deliveroo in London.

She alerted the bank within an hour as she does online banking, they cancelled the card and promptly refunded her account, sending out a brand new card within two days with a new number.

All good.

Then four or five days ago, the same thing happened, again two transactions with Deliveroo, both less than £30, and in London.

Same thing again, the bank have refunded and are sending ANOTHER card out.

The lady in question I'm sure would never give her PIN number out, and lives over 300 miles from London.

Any thoughts? Could her computer be an issue?

She has never had any problems in the last ten years.

Thank you in anticipation.....smile

In those intervening weeks, she needs to go through and list every single place she used her card and how (pc, phone, in person etc).
Check if she ever used it somewhere that still uses a manual credit card machine.
An option would be that her PC is compromised, or even someone close to her is flat out copying her card details.
Surely the police should be talking to the address where the deliveroo was sent?
For it to have happened twice, both being used for deliveroo in London, implies someone is targetting her in some way.
Does she have kids or any friends in London?

She does have a son who lives in London as it happens. There is no way he would knowingly be involved in this though.

She didn't get him an "attached card" - I forget the exact wording - but you used to be able to get a secondary card for a child?

No, he's mid thirties, in IT and is very clued up about this stuff. He has a Mac I'm pretty sure.

I'll ask her to change her Pin number when she gets her third card (If that will help)

Surely the banks fraud dept can get to the bottom of this?

Could someone be collecting the details with a contactless reader and then be passing them on? That's what the RFID wallets are supposed to prevent. Otherwise why scam such a low amount?

I wouldn't stress it - so long as they sort it.

I had an rbs card (replacement for recently scammed card) frauded while it was still in its sealed delivery envelope on the hallway table. Figure that one out.

I personally don't / won't use Deliveroo as they want to store card details, always a big no no from me.

I gave up with one card after the third time it was scammed. I did see it suggested that the card company's call centre might have been 'leaky'. Was certainly interesting that they gave a good impression of absolutely not giving a toss.

On one of the cards they got foreign currency from a bank and bought a couple of flights - surely easy to look further into if you wanted to.

Does she actually have a deliveroo account and it’s that that has been compromised, or does she not and someone is using her card details on ‘their’ account?

A friend of mine had this and it was due to a cash machine being compromised. But, in this case I bet the son is using the wrong credit card details for delivery. I have several relatives cards on different accounts and have to make an effort to confirm the right one is selected.

I'll see her tomorrow and ask her, but I doubt it. Thanks.

What I can't understand is why don't they do it for hundreds rather than mess about with low amounts, or is it because it is less than the contactless limit?

Low amounts are usually test sales before they rinse it......

When you go into a petrol station to pay look for the camera on the ceiling which is pointing at the card machine where you punch your number in.

But it’s Deliveroo so presumably they would have to buy online meaning the PIN is no good and the crooks would need the long number, CVC and address?

It's nothing to do with you.

Don't concern yourself.

I always cover the buttons with my hand over the top. Cash machines too.

I'm concerned because it may happen to myself or my wife in the future, also I will show her this thread which I'm sure will be very helpful, and give her some pointers.

Highly unlikely it will be a contactless fraud as despite what you read, any details collected of the card are actually of little use. The fact is, both chip & pin and contactless are way harder to defraud than online payments, so it’s normally that (fraudsters tend to go for the easiest route).

If she hasn’t already, your wife’s friend should run a malware check on her computer. Failing that, I’d guess it was at one of the online retailers she uses, most likely a smaller, less sophisticated one with an outdated payments page. If she looks back at what she’s spent she may be able to spot it (eg a local club, shop doing school uniform, that sort of thing).

Note: forgot to say - the reason it’ll be for smaller amounts will most likely be that they are testing for whether it gets noticed. If it doesn’t, then the details are more valuable and can be used or more likely sold on the dark web.
