My best mate is a Mac man whilst I am a PC person. We both use AIM with no problems. You don't have to subscribe to AOL in order to use AIM by the way.

What versions of MacOS and Windows are being used?

I've yet to get this to work after a lot of trying over the last year or two with no joy.

Mac to Mac is fine. Mac to PC craps out.

My mate is on OS X 10.2.9 and uses the iChat client to access the AIM service not the AOL provided software.

We (Mac) use AIM to talk to GF's family in Ireland (PC). Found that clamping the bandwidth at our end (you can do it in the iSight settings) improved things greatly at their end.

You could check out Sightspeed (www.sightspeed.com/). I've had all sorts of firewell issues using an iChat to AIM video link, not much fun debugging that across continents. Sightspeed isn't iChat but does the job.

with sightspeed the free service limits you to 15mins video chat a day.

there is software, which is a msn clone, allows video chat on mac with people who have msn on pc.

the video conferencing is still in its infancy though.
