I was going to cancel our Sky subscription (£106 a month).
We do use it, but not like we did years ago. The recent box office football games really annoyed me, to the point it made me look to see what we were paying.

However, in true Sky style, they offered us a couple of deals.
We have the older style (non Sky Q) boxes. Two of them, under the multiroom package.
One of these boxes connects to the TV in the bedroom via RF and using a magic eye we can change the channel.
Sure, the quality isn't the same as downstairs, but its good enough.

If we were to get Sky Q and have the main box and secondary mini box downstairs. Do I need a 3rd mini box upstairs to watch it? I can see it doesn't do RF out.

Can I just buy another mini box from ebay and plug that in upstairs, or are these added according to your sky package?

Thanks
Andy

The Sky Q uses a "mini" box which I believe connects using WiFi to the Original SkyQ box.

We have the full package (minus BT Sport, but includes Sports HD and F1 etc) with their fastest broadband.
Virgin was not available in our area.

I think we pay around £78+£5 for the "multi room" (Sky were doing a deal!)

The mini boxes use a mesh system to attach to the primary Q box I think.

Iirc - that’s what our installer said. Sky Q is very good though.

Ive got 3 mini's now, once you pay for multiroom you can just add them. I paid £50 for my last one.

I really like Q, much better to use then sky HD.

Thats very helpful, thank you everyone.

Sounds like I can just order the main box and mini. Then purchase another mini off ebay for the bedroom.

When I got Sky Q, I got a box and 2 minis, for very little extra. And then it's their equipment, not mine, so if anything goes wrong, they have to replace it.

Sky Q is great.

Just to reinforce this point, with Sky Q you are renting the boxes, you don’t own them (as with old Sky HD). So someone selling them on EBay is breaking their Sky agreement and stealing the mini box, and you’re receiving stolen goods.

You don’t extra monthly for additional mini boxes, just buy as many mini boxes you need off Sky.

New question.......

Can I connect my main Q box by ethernet and have a mini box connect to the main by WiFi? Just thought main box would download stuff faster if on a cable but I can't connect mini by cable and settings seem to be either wired or wireless.

Now that I have Sky Q installed, I can answer this.

The answer is yes as thats exactly how mine is setup.
The engineer was very worried that I had a Draytek router and a couple of Unifi mesh wifi AP's. He said Sky engineers often have trouble with getting it to work. However, it's working fine on my setup.

If it starts to play up, I will cable in all 3 Sky Q boxes and vlan them off the rest of the network.

Mini boxes are £50 at the moment, via Sky Black Friday sale. Self install. I have another on its way ..

To confirm, yes it is how we have ours wired.
