This is further out than the 2021 silly season thread, but Paul Stoddart (ex Minardi) is looking at coming back with a) a new team or b) buying out a team if it's less than the $200m F1 entry fee. He would go the Haas way and contract stuff out, he's apparently been looking into it for a few years and has 90% of what he needs to come back, whichever way it might happen.

Would an existing team looking for a way out go for less than the $200m to hand over to him?

Would be good for F1 if he returned but not if they are the last 2 at the back

I'd be happy to see this happen, straight talking Aussie, the only one that had the balls to call Indy 2005 out for what it was.

Be nice to have more cars on the grid (so long as they're not last all the time)

Stoddart getting his ducks in a row, for when Gene Haas decides to stop throwing good money after bad?

I am a fan of Eddie Jordan (moreso back when he was running his team) but this is all the better, put the two together and watch the sparks fly smile

How odd, for no particular reason, I was just thinking about Stoddart & Minardi the other day. I was thinking about how honest, tenacious, passionate & straight talking he appeared to be & that F1 needs another Stoddart. Having seen this I (obviously) think he'd be a welcome (re) addition the the Paddock. Will it happen? probably not, but I'd welcome it were it to happen. Go on Paul, you know you want to! smile

I like Stoddart.

Not so long ago I had a brief chat to him at a Historic F1 meet at Brands. I was just wandering around the back of the pits and he was in one with an old 80's Tyrrell. I assume he owned the car or the team running it. Showed him a pic I took of the car racing in the GP at Brands back in in the day. He pointed out a few things on the car that were from that race .... seemed a properly genuine enthusiast.

Though quite how anyone that wealthy still looks like they sleep in the bins is beyond me! smile

I have an uncle who whilst not in the 'wealthy' league Stoddart is in, is still pretty minted. He too smokes heavily and looks like stig of the dump as a result no matter how hard he tries!

Wonder if buying back Minardi/AT is an option for him, I would like to see that, and a rebrand back to Minardi (seems PS still owns the Minardi name).

How did Paul Stoddart become silly rich from his airline business while all Vijay Mallya could do was spunk it away?

About 15-20 years ago there was an official F1 Magazine, published monthly. For a few years it was a good read, lot's of articles, great Photography. I recall that one artical was on Stoddart. From what little I recall he was heavily involved in Aviation/Airline spares, I "think" the Airline grew out of that, but was "almost" secondary to spares side of the business? It was something like that anyway. I think he was also far more frugal, less flashy & down to Earth than Mallya appeared to be having fought his way up from nothing. He's always been someone I'd like to meet, seems like an interesting Guy.

He's still been running an F1 team in effect, offering 2 seater experiences during F1 weekends. So it would be a question of changing the car they're running to an actual F1 car instead of the old school 2 seater Tyrrell/Minardi ran.

I miss Stoddart, I miss Minardi. They need to come back. Just imagine the fireworks if a Haas collided with a Minardi between Stoddart and Steiner. But given Grosjean is leaving F1, that would be less likely to happen. Thankfully.

Vijay Mallya inherited the family brewing business (Kingfisher) and following the death of his father adopted the idea that he should become a sort of Indian Richard Branson culminating in the launching of his own airline - something he was patently unqualified to do and unlike Branson, seemed unwilling to take the advice of those that did. So the airline promptly began to loose shedloads of cash. Whilst staff and the Indian tax authorities went without payment, he continued to live a billionaire's lifestyle and running the F1 team. Currently holed up in London fighting extradition to India.

There's a series on Billionaire Playboys on Netflix and the episode on VM is worth a look.

Stoddart made his money selling airplane parts. The airline was an extension of this so he knew the business before he started and I don't think has any grand plans in the same way Mallya did.
