Anybody Re-bodied a car?
Discussion
Read a little snippet yesterday about SVA etc. A rebodied car does not require SVA if the new body is on original unmodified chassis or floorpan.
So far so good but what exactly is 'unmodified'?
I must admit i have not searched further for any other info as am just looking for guidelines.
Was interested if this means no welding to original chassis? As to remount my jago on the SJ chassis i wanted to make sure the roll cage is SECURE i.e. weld a substantial mounting plate with the mounting spigot on it.(same at the rear for the stays.)
This also bu**ers up my plans for the old spitfire i have kicking around the garden, as i have a 'design' floating around in my head but it involves removing part of the front bonnet mount assembly to narrow the front, which is of course welded to the chassis and now dont know if that forms part of it?
Any ideas? Or is this another grey SVA road traffic use regs area? My first question is how does the engineer examining it know what was unmodified to start with?

i would expext it to be more concerned that origional engine gear box and axles are fitted in their origional positions and not with what is added to the chassis to mount the new body
even in your spit case chassis would be origional just pinched at front a bit - i doubt that is a problem

You are OK provided you do not change the chassis between the suspension mountings as in shortening or stretching the wheelbase.
Nor must you substantially alter the location of the engine or gearbox. Change Spit engine for 5 litre Chevy OK but move engine to build midengine car not OK.
You can alter the overhangs - weld to the chassis.
Do not worry too much about the alterations your doing take a look at a Banham kit to see how much you are allowed to do.
