Started watching this last night and ended up watching first 3 episodes. I really liked it. Good period stuff (cars, fashion, smoking everywhere etc) and excellent acting. Will carry on to the end with this one. Although about chess which can be a bit boring on TV the actual games were not intrusive to the story.

Was a good watch this; finished it last night. I too enjoy seeing the set and customs etc. When she's in the department store having a look around and there's the "Modern Living" sign on the wall, which looks positively archaic by today's standards!

Thought this was a cracker - really well done and certainly worth a watch.

Also made me want to go retrieve the old chess set from the back of the cupboard !

Binged this over two evenings. Very enjoyable even for someone with only a layman's knowledge of chess.

Really enjoyed episode 1 BUT ...

Without revealing too much (i.e. no spoilers please...), can those who've watched this answer a quick question?

The use of one particular word, and the associated explanation, were a bit borderline/uncomfortable viewing with my 14-year-old lad (yeah, maybe I'm just getting old...).

Is there any recurrence, or related story arc that might concern a parent, in the later episodes?

TIA (answer by PM probably best, if there is anything plot-related).

Cheers, Dave

I thought it did a good job of portraying attitudes as they were at the time.

Sure, there may be some content (and language) which cause some folks to raise an eyebrow, but then it does have a 15 rating for a reason.

If some elements of TQG made for uneasy viewing with your lad, I'd certainly take Hidden Figures of the watch list - and that would be a shame.

If it’s the girls discussing a sex act, nope you have nothing to worry about later on

I am a bit surprised by the love here. 3-episodes in and I am not desperate to watch the next.

Episode-1 seems to sum up the story. Certainly the storyline is easy to drag out in a big book, but the acting and production don’t overcome the shortcomings of the simple storyline.

Some of the actual game play was quite boring, being a non player myself I have no idea wether a move is a good one or not but the chess was only part of the story.
I enjoyed it overall and it helped that the star is quite a looker smile

She is a dead ringer for my 5th youngest niece.
Acting, script, music, filming all brilliant.
I loved it.

Thought the set lighting was amazing. And the clothes. Was a visual feast.
Did well to make such a cerebral game exciting to watch.

Thought it was brilliant. I've played a good deal of chess, and it inspired me to go and get beaten by the computer several times a night.
Enjoyed it more than anything since 'sex education'.

The most I've been invested in a character for a long time, especially when she revisited a few things in the last few episodes. Beautifully written and performed and looked amazing.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this is only 7 episodes long, I got bored a long time ago of TV shows that are written purposely to stretch them out to 50+ episodes, Agents of Shield and Orphan Black were two culprits I never got to the end of.

I have not enjoyed a series as much as this one since Breaking Bad. The last episode was beautifully done and I am glad they didn't succumb to the obvious trope of the russians being the bad guys.

I also went online and played my first game of chess in 40 years. I smashed them to bits but embarrassingly I had completely forgot about the stalemate rule rolleyes
