Afternoon all! Little bit of background -

I am a 29year old self employed fencing contractor, been at it 13 years now. X2 kids (2+7). As of late my back and shoulder has been playing me up quite considerably, doctor and osteopath have given me the impression that the issue is indeed connected to my work and isn’t going to go away, and will worsen with time, leading me into thinking I may need to start thinking of a get out plan.

From March until the end of June, I worked part time for Co op Funercare due to work going quiet and materials availability being limited due to lockdown etc. I absolutely loved it, fantastic job. My duties included collected the deceased from hospitals, care homes, private houses etc, care and preparing the deceased in the mortuary, building coffins, encoffining the deceased, plus ceremonial duties such as hearse driving, carrying etc. As I say, fantastic job, I loved it and it do it full time In A heartbeat. The issue is the pay is crap and can’t offer me full time hours, just a part time contract with the ability to obviously top up the hours with overtime and on call.

I have a keen interest in cars and driving, well machinery in general. I have a tracked dumper licence, SSSTS qualifies and valued CSCS card. Good attention to detail, very thorough. I’m a good grafter!

Other than the funeral game, I’m really not too sure where to be looking! I’ve never really had a formal interview, nor written a CV. I can’t really afford to earn any less than circa £21k a year, and even then that’s cutting it fine.

So gang, throw some ideas my way! Based in Peterborough if that helps!

Sounds to me like you’re looking for a trade here, something where the skill is working with your hands. Unfortunately that’s not my area of expertise (you should see my weekend DIY efforts), being in finance and tech myself.

That said, thought I’d ask as was curious: what did you enjoy so much about the funeral role? Wouldn’t be for everyone!

Might also help someone else help you if you’re able to describe what makes a job great for you.

I was going to suggest training as an undertaker but then googled and discovered the salary is 18-21k which seems a pittance for the work involved.

Clearly a bit of gore doesn’t put you off and physical active work is your preference. How about becoming a paramedic or police officer?

Basically a good friend of mine is a funeral director and gave me a call knowing that I’m not very good at sitting about at home! I went in not really knowing what to expect and within two hours, due to being the only *powerfully built* chap on shift that morning, was sent to remove a deceased chap from a flat. So I was thrown right in at the deep end! It really fascinated me seeing how much work goes into the end result of yours loved one in the chapel, or at the funeral. It’s certainly not for everyone, two other started within a few days of me and only lasted a couple of shifts and went a funny colour at the sight of the deceased.

For the work involved, in my opinion it’s massively underpaid. To put it into perspective, for circa £10p/h you have to deal with all manner of bodily fluids/crap, install eye caps to keep eyes closed, remove catheters/IV lines, breathing tubes, sewing mouths shut... I could go on! You can earn more delivering pizzas.
