Family Wagon

My friend is looking for a newer car to replace his aging A6 Avant. It’s going to be the main family transport, so needs to be good on space and reliable. Also his father-in-law’s recently passed away, so needs to have the ability to take a family of 4, plus an adddtional adult in comfort on days outs.

Criteria:

Budget up to 16k
Diesel
Good boot space for a lab size dog plus addtional stuff for days out
Needs to fit 2 kids in child booster style seats, plus 1 adult in comfort in the rear.
Ideally an estate but MPV if needs must
Doesn’t have to be quick, but comfort is preferred.

Any suggestions?

I'd say an SUV would tick a lot of boxes. especially in the across seat space department:

Infiniti QX70 spec & space but the boot isn't as big as the Grand Cherokee listed below:

We like our s-max, very well kitted out in titanium sport & hugely practical! That also has the 210bhp engine so it's no slouch.

Hopefully I'm not hijacking your thread, but I've been wondering a similar thing!

My first child was born a month ago, and while my partner's Smart ForFour does the job at the minute, I feel like we'll be in trouble if we need to transport anything other than the pram, which fills the boot.

Our criteria are slightly different though:

Budget of £12k
Estate or saloon, but estate preferred
Petrol
Manual
More than 150bhp, over 200bhp preferred
Must have an Isofix point in the back
Age doesn't matter (in fact my partner would have a 90s Volvo wagon if it wasn't for the lack of Isofix)

Any ideas? So far I'm considering a Volvo 850R, Impreza wagon, Forester or an E39 5-series Touring.

Regarding diesels, the 4 cylinder is frugal but not the most refined thing. 6 cylinder E350 should be in budget.
