I've done a bit of research on this and I'm none the wiser - I've seen a relatively cheap laptop (my sister has asked me to look in to one for her) and it's got a 128Gb eMMC "drive" with Windows 10. It's for low use - browsing, occasional Roblox (for her daughter) and that's about it.
I know Windows 10 is happy enough with that storage, but what's the real difference between SSD and eMMC - I know access speed is different, but would it be noticeable really?
Thanks
JTW

SSDs can be easily replaced or upgraded, eMMCs are soldered onto the boards like smartphone memory modules.
More here, shows speed difference between SSD too - https://www.windowscentral.com/emmc-vs-ssd

I've got an eMMC equipped laptop for casual use. It's fine within its limits. It is a relatively low spec machine with 4GB of RAM, and if you run it out of RAM so it is paging heavily you notice the relatively slow storage more than you might with a faster SSD.
Mind you it was £100 (https://www.anandtech.com/show/15584/how-good-or-bad-is-a-100-laptop-the-coda-spirit-review), so you pays your money....
You may find an eMMC laptop that has space for an M2 SSD, or given 240GB SSDs are about £22, is it cost effective to buy an in stock laptop with a mechanical drive and swap in an SSD ?

Doesn't help that every SSD equipped laptop under £350 that I've found recently has been totally sold out...
Just buy a 'normal' laptop and a separate SSD then install Windows yourself - also gets rid of the bloatware that the OEM will have put on the laptop.james_TW said:
