Bit of fun. No driver aids to sort you out.

When cars all ran 100 section tyres at most and were actually able to move when it was snowy and icy!

And lets not forget WHY you needed to be a good driver back then:

(Before ABS, seatbelts, even before "safety" door catches....... )

If you can stomach it, watch "signal 30" on youtube.

Made by a US police force in the late 50s as an educational film, it shows real people on real crashes. But they are dead.

An advert for seat belts, paying attenetion, crash protection, not drink driving and lots of others we take for granted today.

^ Was shown that at 16 at school in the 70's.
A few class mates left the hall to throw up.

Imagine those road condition these days - the county would immediately be thrust into a level 5 lockdown

I remember driving in roads like that in the mid eighties. Fun in a SWB 2L V4 Transit, boring in a front wheel drive Renault Master (it just acted like the snow wasn’t there).

Wow that 3 lane road, about one minute into this video is pretty unique? Traffic going in either direction can use the middle lane, all broken line markings.....

There used to be quite a few 3 lane roads..... i recall the A449 between Wolverhampton and Stafford only being changed from 3 lanes to two wide lanes in the 90's - ish.

Hugely dangerous, but then it made you concentrate...

The A614 near our old house in Nottinghamshire had many 3 lane sections.
The funny thing was at the time it never struck me as dangerous.
Bit of a “winner takes it all “situation

I read somewhere (can't find the reference) that the safety record of such roads wasn't bad, an example perhaps of 'obviously dangerous' being an oxymoron.

No seat belts, Neck breaker seats, hard steering wheels, no collapsible steering column.

When I worked @ the appallingly dire BL dealers, in Woodford green, in the late 70s, the retired old boy mechanic Harry, by then a part time cleaner, @ the place, told me how years before, he was called out to recover a crashed police car. The top of the windscreen had come back and literally taken both of the unfortunate guys heads off......

They haven't all gone - Leeds Ring Road Rodley to Horsforth.

The solid white line always puzzles me - going up hill you can only use 2 lanes but going down you can use all 3 (theoretically anyway!)

The accidents is these old vids seem completely archaic now. Does any young person speak like that?

I am quite young and speak like that. Some people have commented that it's like listening to Pathe news.
