My friend has a Vanquish and under the hood on the top of each front suspension mount is a black plastic block with an aluminum structure inside. The parts manual calls this a "hexcell block assembly". Part number ED33-10874-AA. What is the function of this weird item that looks like an afterthought? I thought it looked like a heatsink, but the plastic cover leaves no gaps for air to circulate.

Are you talking about the black blocks on top of the cross brace?

They will be for pedestrian head protection, effectively to give some cushioning between the bonnet skin and the hard point of the cross brace mounting in an accident.

With sports cars, the low bonnet means this sort of solution, or a pyrotechnic device to deploy the bonnet upwards (like on F-TYPE) if a collision is detected are not uncommon.

That legislation is just wrong!

If a pedestrian walks in front of my car and gives me no time to stop or avoid them, then I don't want them to have a nice comfortable landing on my bonnet, damaging it in the process. I want to hit them with something hard and robust, so nothing gets damaged and they don't do it again.

I wasn't proposing something like those old leaping Jaguar bonnet ornaments that would impale pedestrians, just something that gives them a good whack and makes them more cautious next time.

And not even a whack that is hard enough to draw blood, of course, wouldn't want to have to wash blood off the bonnet wink
