Zanzibar anyone?
Discussion
Went there last October for 10 days after a week's safari in Kenya.
Compared with other holiday destinations in the area, outside of the hotel complexes, Zanzibar is quite poor. The vast majority of the population are Muslim so you should observe the basic requirements re modest dress code etc etc when out and about.
Stayed at Breezes on the east coast which is a superb hotel if you want to really chill out. This hotel is excellent if you want a quiet time - beautiful white beach, smooth turquoise sea, great food and South African wines not too expensive.
If you want a bit more action and are younger than my advancing years, you should go up to the north of the island where there are some great beach bars and plenty of diving. My son went there diving last year.
If you would like more detailed info on Zanzibar, send an email to me with a phone number and i can give you a lot more info.
Overall impression - my wife and I loved it and will go back soon.

I went for my 30th this year with my wife and a couple of friends. We all absolutely loved it. It was probably the most chilled holiday i've ever had. Mainly consisted of eating, lounging, swimming, snorkelling, eating, lounging...
We stayed on the east coast which has a nice breeze that other parts of the island don't get. It made the heat far more bearable. We stayed at Kinazi Upepo, basic accomodation but a great atmosphere, friendly staff and the best food ever. People seemed to come from the other accomodation in the area (one of them being Breezes if i remember correctly) for the food.
It was faily quiet and evenings were mainly spent relaxing in the bar/ restaurant at Kinazi and that was good enough for me!
Activity wise we hired a local fisherman to take us out towards the reef for some snorkelling (v good) which cost about $10 for all 4 of us for an afternoon. We also took a swim with dolphins tour which was fantastic (plenty fo dolphins were seen, plenty of jellys stung us) and of course we did the obligatory spice tour which was ok.
All in all a great time was had by everyone and i think we'd all happily return.

Went back in 99 to chill out after climbing Kilimanjaro. It took four days to get there!
Stonetown is great. Allow a few hours and get lost. There's some cool old buildings and you'll pop out in the end. You used to be able to eat at the BBQs by the Arab fort for under a quid.
Stayed on Jambiani beach in a hut 20m from the sea, with a couple of palm trees between us and the water. About a fiver a night. We picked coconuts and other stuff Suliman had pointed out on the spice tour. The local kids used to come and sell food their Mums had made. You could buy little doughnuts for 3p Chapatis and Samosas were about 10p.
We did the Dolphin swim twice, once from Stonetown and once from Jambiani. It was that good! Incidentally exactly the same trip (even boat and snorkle) and was half the price the second time.
Remember teaching a parrot, in some restaurant, to say arse instead of Jambo.
Stayed two weeks and didn't want to head back to Nairobi. Hope it hasn't changed much!
