767 doing funny things just south of Norwich
Discussion
Hi All,
Just had my FIL on the phone asking me to look out for a possibly military 767 that's been doing about 20 loops around my town.
He was wondering if there was some sort of issue on board, like landing gear not working properly. Any plane people know anything about this? I'm assuming there's some discussion on a plane forum somewhere.

I was at Lakenheath listening in on the scanner as it was holding. It was inbound bringing back groundcrew from a recent F-15 deployment to Iceland.
The issue was that Lakenheath had the cables raised for the Morning Patrol of 7 F-15s and couldn't / wouldn't lower them temporarily for the 767 to land.
The next hour was spent hearing an increasingly frustrated 767 pilot argueing with ATC about cable state and can you not have more people to lower them after the F-15s land / bringing the F-15s back quicker / fuel status / Mildenhall not accepting him as an alternate etc etc. The more the 767 argued or tried to reason, the more ATC seemed to dig their heels in. It finally landed at Lakenheath with the fuel reserves getting a bit on the low side for a diversion to Stansted (according to the 767 pilot who's voice had gone up an octave....) It was quite an extrordinary thing to eavesdrop on!

Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'cables raised'? The only thing I can think of that's even close would be the arrestor hook system on a carrier, but they aren't used on dry land are they? The issue was that Lakenheath had the cables raised for the Morning Patrol of 7 F-15s and couldn't / wouldn't lower them temporarily for the 767 to land.

Exactly that. https://marshalladg.com/insights-news/raf-renews-e...Aye. The earlier F-15 fighter version is getting a bit long in the tooth now so in-flight issues ( hydraulics particularly) occur every so often. I've seen 3 F-15s land with the hook/cable combo since lockdown1 ended. Makes for a great photo as the sparks spit out the back but I wouldn't imagine it's high on the pilots wish-list.
